Argentine water in demand amid gold, oil, gas rush

(AP) ? Argentina is promoting a new era of mining and energy production, welcoming billions of dollars in foreign investment to unlock huge new reserves of natural gas, oil, gold, lithium and other metals once thought to be unprofitable or out of reach.

But there's one factor threatening this resource boom, something politicians and energy executives rarely mention: Huge amounts of fresh water will be required for these operations in a country where water scarcity holds back development and 16 percent of households still lack connections to publicly treated drinking water.

To make good on the promised energy wealth from one large Argentine shale oil and gas deposit announced this year, experts say it could take an estimated 38 billion gallons (144 billion liters) of water ? equal to the total daily amount of water supplied by public systems to the entire United States.

Other major projects include Pascua Lama, the world's highest-altitude gold mine, which is poised to open along the spine of the Andes and produce precious metals for 25 years. The rock will be processed on the Argentine side of the Chilean border with a mix of cyanide and 14 billion gallons of water, says the Canadian mining giant Barrick Gold Corp.

The company says it uses less than 1 percent of available river water for its gold mines.

But downstream in San Juan province, people already face water-use restrictions and must pay 99 times more for water than what Barrick Gold pays under a deal with provincial officials, said lawmaker Miguel Bonasso, who leads the Argentine congress's natural resources commission and sponsored a controversial Glacier Law that promises to create a scientific inventory of the nation's water resources.

"If Barrick Gold had to pay for this water, it wouldn't invest in the mine ? it wouldn't be profitable," Bonasso said Friday.

Argentina's mining ministry, meanwhile, estimates that $50 billion worth of lithium can be harvested from the salt flats of Jujuy province alone, roughly equal to the nation's entire foreign reserves. Extracting lithium for use in batteries that power cellphones, laptops and electric cars requires water to create a dirty brine, which indigenous groups fear will spoil their traditional salt-collecting livelihood.

But most of the attention recently has focused on the discovery of a huge deposit of gas and oil trapped in shale rock deep under the "Vaca Muerta" ("Dead Cow" in English) basin of Neuquen province. While 90 percent of its key deposits are unexplored, Vaca Muerta could increase Argentina's oil reserves by at least 750 million barrels, and probably three times that much, said Michael Lynch, an oil analyst and president of Strategic Energy and Economic Research.

Vaca Muerta also has an estimated 4.5 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, according to Spain's Repsol-YPF energy company.

The discovery boosts the country's "technically recoverable" shale gas reserves to 774 trillion cubic feet, according to U.S. Department of Energy estimates, potentially making Argentina the world's third-largest provider of shale gas, behind China and the United States.

"It's more than important, because it will enable us to keep sustaining and promoting even more development for all Argentines," President Cristina Fernandez said when she announced the discovery earlier this year. She followed up in New York last week by securing $1.15 billion in promised investments from executives with Exxon Mobile Corp., AES Corp. and Apache Corp.

Long thought worthless, such deposits are now accessible through what is known as "slick-water hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling," or "fracking," for short. This U.S. technology involves drilling deep down and then horizontally through the shale, setting off explosions, and then injecting a mixture of fresh water, sand and chemicals at high pressure to force the fuel to the surface.

Fracking takes between 5 million and 6 million gallons (19 million and 23 million liters) of water per well, and it would take many thousands of wells to extract what they're hoping to produce, said Cornell University engineering professor Anthony R. Ingraffea, an expert on the complex mechanics of fracturing rock deep underground.

In arid western Argentina, the water would have to be drawn from underground aquifers or from reservoirs and rivers fed by Andean snows and glaciers.

Once used for fracking, it is usually too contaminated to be recycled for drinking water or agriculture. In the U.S., this wastewater is often injected deep underground, where environmentalists say there are no guarantees it won't contaminate groundwater.

"It's about to get a lot drier" in these parts of Argentina, said Ingraffea, who advocates limiting fracking due to complaints of water contamination.

Fracking varies based on each site's geology, but the Barnett Shale deposit in similarly dry north Texas has used more than 15,000 wells to produce more than 8.8 trillion cubic feet of gas over 18 years, Texas said. So if Vaca Muerta needs roughly half that number of wells for roughly half the gas, it could take 38 billion gallons of water to extract it all, based on what Ingraffea calls a conservative industry standard of 5 million gallons per well.

"Clearly, that's a hell of a lot of water," said Daniel Talliant, who runs Argentina's Center for Human Rights and the Environment. "I would also stress the importance and risk posed to subterranean aquifers, which are a critical and delicate resource."

The oil and gas industry maintains that it can keep nearby groundwater supplies clean, but environmentalists are increasingly challenging this claim, citing poisoned wells and fish die-offs in nearby waterways. So if the United States hasn't resolved this debate through its relatively swift justice system and extensive environmental regulations, is Argentina ? or any country in the developing world ? prepared to do any better?

Talliant doesn't think so: "We've been doing these things for years without social conscience," he said. "It's only recently that we've begun to realize that we're placing our critical environmental resources at risk."

Argentina's Glacier Law, passed last November, bans virtually all human activity on glaciers and adjacent areas of rocky permafrost that were recently covered in ice and still hold water. It requires an inventory of water from glacial runoff, data that could build support for downstream protections as well. Most of the water in the western Andean foothills flows down from glacial peaks, just where most mining activity is planned.

Fernandez vetoed an earlier Glacier Law under pressure from pro-mining provincial allies before allowing the latest version to pass, but it was immediately blocked in court by mining companies and provincial officials, and the president hasn't supported it since then, Bonasso said.

Indigenous groups, meanwhile, have alleged that the provinces are allowing their water to become contaminated. In 2001, Mapuches in Neuquen got clean drinking water trucked into their community by going to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. Several dozen other indigenous communities also sued, accusing their provincial governments of exploiting minerals and ruining their water without consulting them.

Most of these cases are now before the Supreme Court, which must weigh environmental protections against provincial mining rights under the constitution.

Climate change to cost Canada billions: panel (Reuters)

OTTAWA (Reuters) ? Climate change will cause damage in Canada equivalent to around 1 percent of GDP in 2050 as rising temperatures kill off forests, flood low-lying areas and cause more illnesses, an official panel said on Thursday.

The National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy said Canada's Conservative government - criticized by green activists for not doing enough to fight global warming - should take measures to mitigate the effects of climate change, which most scientists blame on greenhouse gas emissions.

The north of Canada, the world's second largest country, is warming up at a much faster pace than the rest of the Earth.

"Climate change presents a growing, long-term economic burden for Canada," said the NRTEE, which the government set up in 1988 to provide advice on environmental issues.

According to the most likely scenario outlined by the panel, the damage done by global warming would be between 0.8 percent and 1 percent of GDP by 2050 and could hit almost 2.5 percent by 2075.

"The magnitude of costs depends upon a combination of two factors: global emissions growth and Canadian economic and population growth," the panel said.

Depending on how fast the world heats up and what actions Ottawa takes, the NRTEE said the damage in 2050 could range from C$21 billion ($20 billion) to C$43 billion a year.

The panel recommended several measures to help limit damage from climate change:

* enhance forest fire prevention, control pests, and plant climate-resilient tree species

* prohibit new construction in areas at risk of flooding in coastal areas

* install pollution control technologies to limit ozone formation.

Opposition legislators said the report showed the Conservatives needed to do much more to fight global warming.

"Our coastal communities, our forestry industry, and the health of Canadians will all suffer unless we take action right now. Yet this out-of-touch government has produced no plan to deal with the impact of climate change," said Laurin Liu of the official opposition New Democrats.

Environment Minister Peter Kent responded by saying the report showed the importance of adapting to climate change.

Canadians, he told legislators, wanted "a strong, stable, environmentally responsible ... government to take care of the environment, and that is exactly what we are doing".

The NRTEE said Canada would benefit from a global treaty that systematically reduced carbon emissions beyond 2012, when the first stage of the Kyoto Protocol expires.

Canada walked away from Kyoto after the Conservatives took power in 2006 and subsequently adopted a much more modest target for emissions cuts. John Bennett of the Sierra Club mocked Kent by condemning what he said was a "stubborn, deaf, environmentally irresponsible, antiquarian government".

The NRTEE largely dismissed the idea that global warming could help a northern country like Canada by reducing heating costs and making it easier to grow certain kinds of crops.

Family Holidays On A Budget | Corporate Counseling

With Spring Break right around the corner and the economy still struggling to improve taking vacations for the average family can seem like a luxury from the past.? While some families are still heading to Disney World or the nearest Beach, you may not be able to afford it and you may wonder how others can and feel badly about your lack of means.? First of all, don?t be swept under the wave of peer pressure and realize that many people who appear to be ?rich? are in actuality credit card millionaires.? In fact, the book Staycation was written clearly for the people like yourself, too poor to take a vacation and too bored to stay home.? However, the message is clear.? You can set up a vacation of your own without dropping thousands of bucks and take family time without leaving home.

The idea of staycation, or having a family holiday on a budget is to save your pennies for something exciting in the future.? If you commit to taking budget friendly family vacations now, in a year or so, you will have saved enough to take that child friendly cruise or trip to Hawaii that you have always wanted to take.? The other thing to consider, especially with children, is that often they don?t do well away from home for long periods of time and taking a leap of faith to plan something extravagant without ?practicing? can lead to a disappointing experience for the whole family.?

Start your budget friendly family outing with a local excursion.? The benefits are that the car ride is short, no flights to worry about and if things go array or your child ends up with the Murphy?s law stomach flu you will be able to come right back home.? Another hint is to take two vehicles.? This way if your spouse and older children are fairing well camping at the lake but you and the baby are miserable, you can head for the comforts of home.? Camping is always a budget friendly way to go.? Even if you don?t have a fancy camper you can rent one fairly cheap, borrow or rent a cabin and even purchase a decent tent to serve as your short term home away from home.? If you aren?t the camping type, then start researching day trip vacations you can take close to home.? Chances are you haven?t explored your own backyard thoroughly and you may be surprised to find that some exciting venues exist in your home state.? Horse riding adventures, local theme parks, interesting historical sites, hiking tours, river rafting trips ? the point is that the bulk of family expenses can come from lodging expenses.? Cutting trips short, finding cheaper options or taking day trips can slash your costs considerably.

One of the most expensive aspects of vacationing is fulfilling the eating requirements of a family.? Your first tip is to stop being a sucker and set yourself a budget.? If you are visiting a water park or touristy spot ? don?t feel obligated to buy the knick knack souvenir cups and gadgets that will end up in the trash or broken before you even make it home.? Why would anyone pay for a soda?? Instead, go to your dollar store and find some snazzy cups for your children.? Do a little creative grocery shopping purchasing items that you normally don?t buy.? Pack a cooler complete with lunches, pop, lemonade, fruit and snacks to keep your kids from having the munchies and make the radical decision that you aren?t going to spend hundreds of dollars on over priced, under cooked and unhealthy foods.? End of story.? You can take the money you saved and go out for one very nice meal and still be ahead of the game.?

There are plenty of ways to save money and take the vacation that you need to recharge your batteries.? Rather than thinking a vacation is only ?real? if you spend thousands of dollars start simplifying what it takes to help you relax.? Here are some other ideas.

? Sign the family up for a stint volunteering in another town.? You will be giving and getting much more than a vacation.

? Travel with other families and split the costs.? The kids can cozy up on the floor in sleeping bags to save on lodging.

? Take a drive.? Set out with the kids to tour the country.? Mark spots along the way that you want to stop at.

? Shop for bargains.? Many vacation hot spots are offering major coupons that allow you to stay for free, travel for free or eat for free.? Contact venues specifically and ask for further discounts.?

? Travel during ?off season.?? Check rates and plan your trips during non-busy times of the year.?

? Take 3-day weekends and work your vacation week.? Rather than take a whole week off with pay, take a Friday at a time and work the other 4 days.? You will earn more money and be able to take more trips.

? Stay with family.? Visit the grandparents and take trips to new destinations.?

Another important aspect to taking family holidays on a budget is to be realistic.? Don?t use plastic to pay for your outings.? Change your mind and add some creativity to your plans.? You would be surprised how easily you can change a few days at home, visiting local venues and splurging a bit more than usual into staycations that will become a meaningful part of your family?s memory.?

Healthcare Law Appealed To Supreme Court

26 states and a small business group have filed separate appeals to the U.S. Supreme Court asking them to strike down Obama's 2010 healthcare law. In August an appeals court in Atlanta ruled that the individual insurance requirement was unconstitutional making it almost certain that the bill would go to the Supreme Court. From the article: "The Obama administration earlier this week said it decided against asking the full U.S. Appeals Court for the 11th Circuit to review the August ruling by a three-judge panel of the court that found the insurance requirement unconstitutional. That decision cleared the way for the administration to go to the Supreme Court. The administration has said it believes the law will be upheld in court while opponents say it represents an unconstitutional encroachment of federal power."

Debt Consolidation Loan ? Solution to Minimize High Interest Rates

This article has been viewed 6 times.

A borrower stuck with the number of payday or any other regular loans could come under immense financial pressure at some point of time because interest rates in these loans are so high that if not paid back timely can sum up to huge amounts which will seem like impossible to the borrower to clear such loans. To relieve such borrowers, a scheme has been designed by finance industry called debt consolidation loan. One can hire a financial advisor to study his financial condition completely. The advisor assists a person in getting out of such crisis.

So, it is advised to avail a loan only if borrower is secured about the repayment. This is because payday loans which had been a great help to the borrower in the need of hour, can turn to financial disaster if not managed wisely. Most of the people know that credit card debt can multiply very fast because of high interest rates but the problem that can arise from payday loan can be even worse.

For debt consolidation, the borrower should approach a bank or finance company, whose services he is already availing. He can negotiate to reach at a low interest rate for consolidation. If the customer owns an asset like a house ,a vehicle or shares certificate etc. and is willing to keep it as collateral , the interest rates can be much lower in case of secured debt consolidation . If a customer has sound credit record, he can go for unsecured consolidation also. In such case, the interest rates would be slightly higher than secured loan but much less than what he is paying today for his payday loan.

The borrower who had lost hope of getting out of lapsed payday loans situation due to debt mounting up everyday, could foresee only bankruptcy as the next thing. But by opting for debt consolidation, he can minimize the interest rates and can foresee end to his debts .One must understand the scheme thoroughly before signing into it and he can also compare among the offers given by a few different companies to find the cheapest one for him. Thus by acting wisely in the situation of crisis, one can reach out to a manageable debt consolidation loan .This will also improve his credit score and will lead him to better future.

Indonesia's only female sex therapist goes online (AP)

JAKARTA, Indonesia ? Zoya Amirin has come across every myth imaginable in her job as sex psychologist in Indonesia: An uncircumcised woman will become sex-crazed. Clove cigarettes increase virility. A gecko's saliva can cure AIDS.

Knowing such misinformation can ruin relationships ? and even lives, the only female sex psychologist in the world's most populous Muslim nation has decided to launch a weekly podcast to provide some frank, accurate talk about the bedroom.

Her 15-minute, debut episode of "In Bed with Zoya" will air on her website Thursday.

"People here really believe in myths ... that's my biggest challenge," said Amirin, adding she wants to make her show as cool as possible so people will tune in without feeling they're being talked down to.

"It's time to embrace our sexuality in a healthy way," she said, "and to be mature in our understanding."

Her job illustrates some of the changes taking place in Indonesia, which toppled its longtime dictator Gen. Suharto in a wave of pro-democracy street protests just over a decade ago.

The nation of 240 million remains socially conservative in most areas, including relationships, something old-style politicians are desperate to maintain. Yet these customs are coming under pressure from a more freewheeling approach to sex, in part due to increased wealth and more females living and working alone before marriage.

Nearly 40 percent of teens have had sex, a new survey shows, and the Internet has opened the gates to a subject long considered off-limits in public schools.

Bringing up the word "condom" could cost a teacher his job.

"The taboo is not against sex, but against making it public and formal," said Julia Suryakusuma, an Indonesian sociologist who often writes about human sexuality.

That point was hammered home by Education Minister Muhammad Nuh himself, after a video of a much-loved pop star having sex with two girlfriends made its way to YouTube, putting the country of the verge of sexual hysteria.

Asked whether it might be time to add sex ed to the curriculum, he said "No! ... I may be obsolete .... but I think this is something you should learn about naturally."

Young people have even less luck at home.

For most, bringing up the subject of sex with their parents is inconceivable.

"That would just be too embarrassing," said Dianita Permani, an 18-year-old high school student in the capital, Jakarta.

"I'd rather talk about it with my close friends ... look things up on the Internet, read vulgar novels," she says with a giggle. "Personally, I don't want to have sex until I get married. But it is everywhere. I'll just have to follow my instincts, I guess, and figure out for myself what's good or bad."

Amirin hopes people like Permani will turn to her as a credible and easily accessible source of information.

Her podcast, which will be co-hosted by television personality Chantal Della Concetta, who has drawn some controversy herself for racy lingerie pictures in a popular magazine, will at first be a frank conversation between two friends.

The first subject: Debunking sexual myths.

They include that putting a bead beneath a boy's foreskin will enhance his sexual pleasure, and that girls will be nymphomaniacs if they don't get circumcisions, which continue despite a 2006 ban. Folklore that gecko saliva could cure AIDS, in a country grappling with the fastest growing endemic in Asia, unleashed a wave of gecko hunting and a surge in prices for the reptiles a couple of years ago.

Eventually, the website will include a free online chat service.

Both women are ready for criticism.

Though most of Indonesia's 210 million Muslims are moderate, a hard-liner fringe has become more vocal and violent in recent years, attacking bars, transvestites and anything else deemed "blasphemous."

The hard-liners also have succeeded in influencing politicians who ? afraid of being labeled unIslamic ? pushed through a controversial anti-porn law, used to imprison Nazril "Ariel" Irham, the pop star, even though it appears his sexcapades were never intended for public viewing.

Amirin defended him at his trial, saying he did not show any signs of being an exhibitionist.

More recently, Jakarta Gov. Fauzi Bowo captured the conservative mood of the country's leaders when he responded to the gang-rape of two young women on a public minibus by blaming the victim. Wear a miniskirt, he said earlier this month, and you're practically asking for it.

Aside from a small protest in the capital, Bowo's comments barely made any waves.

Though Amirin's website marks the latest attempt at online sex education, it's certainly not the first.

Last year the National AIDS Commission launched an interactive Web page aimed at teens and young adults. Others have come and gone during the past decade.

Amirin hopes hers is here to stay,

"I want to change mindsets," she said. "It's about time everybody in Indonesia be more open-minded about sex."

Virus Kills Breast Cancer Cells in Laboratory Penn

9/26/2011 8:06:47 AM

A nondisease-causing virus kills human breast cancer cells in the laboratory, creating opportunities for potential new cancer therapies, according to Penn State College of Medicine researchers who tested the virus on three different breast cancer types that represent the multiple stages of breast cancer development.

Adeno-associated virus type 2 (AAV2) is a virus that regularly infects humans but causes no disease. Past studies by the same researchers show that it promotes tumor cell death in cervical cancer cells infected with human papillomavirus. Researchers used an unaltered, naturally occurring version of AAV2 on human breast cancer cells.

"Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer in the world and is the leading cause of cancer-related death in women," said Samina Alam, research associate in microbiology and immunology. "It is also complex to treat."

Craig Meyers, professor of microbiology and immunology, said breast cancer is problematic to treat because of its multiple stages. "Because it has multiple stages, you can't treat all the women the same. Currently, treatment of breast cancer is dependent on multiple factors such as hormone-dependency, invasiveness and metastases, drug resistance and potential toxicities. Our study shows that AAV2, as a single entity, targets all different grades of breast cancer."

Cells have multiple ways of dying. If damage occurs in a healthy cell, the cell turns on production and activation of specific proteins that allow the cell to commit suicide. However, in cancer cells these death pathways often are turned off, while the proteins that allow the cell to divide and multiply are stuck in the "on" position.

One way to fight cancer is to find ways to turn on these death pathways, which is what researchers believe is happening with the AAV2 virus.

In tissue culture dishes in the laboratory, 100 percent of the cancer cells are destroyed by the virus within seven days, with the majority of the cell death proteins activated on the fifth day. In another study, a fourth breast cancer derived cell line, which is the most aggressive, required three weeks to undergo cell death.

"We can see the virus is killing the cancer cells, but how is it doing it?" Alam said. "If we can determine which viral genes are being used, we may be able to introduce those genes into a therapeutic. If we can determine which pathways the virus is triggering, we can then screen new drugs that target those pathways. Or we may simply be able to use the virus itself."

Research needs to be completed to learn how AAV2 is killing cancer cells and which of its proteins are activating the death pathways. According to Meyers, the cellular myc gene seems to be involved. While usually associated with cell proliferation, myc is a protein also known to promote cell death. The scientists have observed increased expression of myc close to the time of death of the breast cancer cells in the study. They report their results in a recent issue of Molecular Cancer.

AAV2 does not affect healthy cells. However, if AAV2 were used in humans, the potential exists that the body's immune system would fight to remove it from the body. Therefore, by learning how AAV2 targets the death pathways, researchers potentially can find ways to treat the cancer without using the actual virus.

In ongoing studies, the Penn State researchers also have shown AAV2 can kill cells derived from prostate cancer, methoselioma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. A fourth line of breast cancer cells -- representing the most aggressive form of the disease -- also was studied in a mouse breast tumor model, followed by treatment with AAV2. Preliminary results show the destruction of the tumors in the mice, and researchers will report the findings of those mouse studies soon.

Other researchers on this project are Brian S. Bowser and Mohd Israr, Department of Microbiology and Immunology; Michael J. Conway, Section of Infection Diseases, Yale School of Medicine; and Apurva Tandon, Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Pathology, Colorado State University.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health, Breast and Cervical Cancer Initiative supported this research. The researchers have filed for a U.S. patent on this work.

(AP) ? Stocks had their biggest gains in more than two weeks Monday after European officials pledged to take action to resolve the region's debt problems. The Dow Jones industrial average jumped 272 points, making up about a third of last week's losses.

European ministers told a meeting of global finance leaders in Washington over the weekend that they would take bolder steps to fight the debt crisis, which threatens to slow the global economy. President Barack Obama called on Europe's leadership Monday to move more quickly to address the problems.

Germany wants banks and private institutions that hold Greek bonds to take a bigger loss on those holdings to reduce Greece's debt burden. European officials have talked about increasing the size of Europe's $595 billion rescue fund by allowing it to take loans from the European Central Bank. Pressure is also mounting for the central bank to lower interest rates.

"The news leaking out of Europe is giving investors hope that the politicians and central bankers in Europe might be putting together a plan," said Channing Smith, managing director of Capital Advisors Inc. "The devil's in the details."

The Dow Jones industrial average shot up 272.38 points, or 2.5 percent, to close at 11,043.86. It was the biggest gain since Sept. 7. JPMorgan Chase & Co. jumped 7 percent to $31.65, the most of the 30 stocks in the Dow.

The Standard & Poor's 500 rose 26.52, or 2.3 percent, to 1,162.95. The Nasdaq composite rose 33.46, or 1.4 percent, to 2,516.69.

About three stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange. All 10 industry groups in the S&P 500 rose.

Financial stocks had the biggest gains in the S&P 500, rising 4.4 percent. Banks have the most to lose if Europe's debt crisis gets worse, so investors picked up those stocks as hopes built that a resolution could be on the way. Huntington Bancshares Inc. rose 8.3 percent, SunTrust Banks Inc. rose 8 percent.

Berkshire Hathaway's Class B shares rose 8.6 percent after the company announced a plan to repurchase stock for the first since Warren Buffett took control in 1965.

Investors have been on edge about Europe's debt problems for months. The Dow plunged 6.4 percent last week, its biggest drop since the week ended Oct. 10, 2008 at the height of the financial crisis.

The market's volatility has made many investors nervous. Since the first week of August, the Dow has closed up or down more than 200 points a total of 16 times. There were only four swings of 200 points or more in the other seven months of 2011.

President Barack Obama said in a town hall meeting that Europe's financial crisis "is scaring the world" and that the actions the region's leaders have taken so far "haven't been as quick as they need to be."

Greece is at risk of defaulting on its debt next month if it does not receive the next installment of a bailout package. If that happens, banks that hold Greek bonds would lose money. Analysts also worry that the economies in Europe and the U.S. could slip into another recession.

News that sales of new homes in the U.S. fell to a six-month low briefly sent indexes lower in morning trading, but by midday Eastern the Dow and S&P were higher.

Boeing Co. rose 4.2 percent after the company delivered its first 787 aircraft to Japan's All Nippon Airways. An analyst said the company's earnings should rise for the next few years if the aircraft maker is able to maintain steady production.

Clorox Co. fell 4.3 percent after Carl Icahn withdrew his proposal for a new slate of directors. That suggested the activist investor was unable to find a buyer for the consumer products company.

Eastman Kodak Co. plunged 26.9 percent after the company borrowed $160 million because most of its cash is deposited overseas. Some analysts took that as a sign that the company is running out of cash as it tries to reinvent itself in the era of digital photography.

Trading volume was a bit heavier than average at 4.5 billion shares.

Euro zone struggles to stem crisis; Obama urges action (Reuters)

NEW YORK/BRUSSELS (Reuters) ? Euro-zone officials are working to magnify the firepower of the region's rescue fund, European Central Bank policymakers said on Monday, while President Barack Obama piled on pressure for Europe to staunch a sovereign debt crisis that threatens the world economy.

Obama, saying the crisis "is scaring the world," urged leaders of the 17-nation euro zone to act quickly to help a region where banks have not fully recovered from the 2008 financial crisis and which is now suffering from the Greek government's debt crisis.

"They are trying to take responsible actions but those actions haven't been quite as quick as they need to be," Obama told a citizens' meeting in Mountain View, California.

After meeting at the IMF/World Bank and G20 meetings in Washington D.C. last week, European policymakers said on Monday they are working on ways to shore up the euro zone financial system and prevent the region's government debt crisis from spreading, but their mixed messages on the size of a rescue fund and the role of the ECB underscored the difficulties for 17 euro-zone nations in reaching consensus.

ECB Executive Board member Lorenzo Bini Smaghi, speaking in New York, said that the 440 billion euros in the bailout fund, known as the European Financial Stability Facility (ESFS), could be used as collateral to borrow from the European Central Bank making more money available for crisis fighting, but it was up to European Union governments to decide how to do this.

"I know that people are thinking about these things. They may not be willing to admit it in the public, but they are thinking about these things," he said, citing the example of two U.S. programs used to recapitalize banks in the 2008-09 financial crisis.

Officials are examining "how to leverage the money out of the EFSF in a more innovative and efficient way," he told a conference organized by Medley Advisors.

But Germany's central banker Jens Weidmann poured scorn on a beefed-up bailout fund. Leveraging the assets could discourage politicians from taking the tough political decisions to cut budget deficits and would weaken faith in the euro, Weidmann said in Washington.

"A bazooka! I don't think it is a recipe that works in Europe," he told the American Council on Germany.

Markets are not concerned about the size of the rescue fund, rather about the political capacity to deliver, he said

"This is a very dangerous thing. It means you completely blur the responsibility between fiscal and monetary policy."

Germany's Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble speaking in Berlin also ruled out increasing the size of the fund although he had said in Washington over the weekend that leverage without tapping the ECB was possible.

A senior European official told Reuters on Saturday that the aim was for a five-fold leverage to give the fund the firepower to help bigger economies such as Italy and Spain if necessary. Analysts have estimated that 1-2 trillion euros is needed to achieve that goal and win market confidence.

ECB Governing Council member Ewald Nowotny from Austria said at a Harvard University forum in Massachussetts on Monday that an increase in the fund was likely, but it "might not be a trillion (euros).

Investors are anxious to see a plan big enough to backstop European banks and help debt laden euro zone governments. U.S. stocks jumped when CNBC television reported that a detailed plan was in the works to leverage the fund up to eight-fold and to use the European Investment Bank to issue bonds and buy up sovereign debt of troubled countries via the ECB.

An EU official in Brussels involved in crisis resolution dismissed the CNBC report as "just bizarre." The official said talks are in the early stages and those with the EIB involve infrastructure projects.

PRESSURE

In Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel pressed for the European Union to strengthen its power to discipline member states that break fiscal rules. Budget deficits are the primary source of Europe's debt crisis and Germany's key concern.

"There should be the right to declare such budgets null and void...otherwise we will not get out of the situation," she said in her strongest language yet on common EU fiscal powers.

Germany's legislature is due to vote this week on expanded EFSF powers and leaders are seeking to quell concerns the new bailout fund would discourage countries from cutting deficits.

Europe came under fierce pressure from the United States and other major economies at weekend talks in Washington to take swift action to stop Greece's debt woes from engulfing bigger euro zone states and harming the world economy.

But officials said reports that planning was already in place for a 50 percent write-down in Greek debt and a vast increase in the euro zone rescue fund were highly premature.

"There is no change to the framework we are working on," said a euro zone official who is involved in decision-making on financial assistance to Greece, Ireland and Portugal.

"All this talk of a specific haircut for Greece or an enlargement of the EFSF, it is all just speculation. We are not working along those lines," said the official.

Merkel, struggling to convince her fractious center-right coalition to back a strengthening of the EFSF in a crucial vote on Thursday, warned that letting Greece default would destroy investor confidence in the euro zone.

Diplomats said any talk of a fallback plan for Greece that would raise the cost to German taxpayers could only make her task more difficult in parliament this week.

DEFAULT WITHIN MONTHS?

Private economists and Brussels think-tanks expect a Greek debt default within months, coupled with a capital injection for European banks and a leveraging up of the EFSF.

Euro zone officials acknowledge that such policy ideas are circulating, but insist planning continues on the basis that Greece's debt burden, which is close to 160 percent of GDP, can be sustained as long as its government cuts its fiscal deficit as demanded by the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund, the so-called troika.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner warned this weekend that inadequate European crisis management heightens the threat of "cascading default, bank runs and catastrophic risk that must be taken off the table." IMF chief Christine Lagarde, also made clear the euro zone needs to act more decisively, notably to recapitalise banks on a large recapitalizescale.

Quietly, euro zone policy makers accept that a combination of a much deeper Greek debt restructuring allied to coordinated bank recapitalizations and a bolstered rescue fund would make sense, but such a plan would require support from all 17 euro zone countries which can take time in the EU.

"The ideas are all there, but it's not as straightforward as just sitting down and deciding it," said another euro zone financial official involved in handling the crisis.

"Many of us can agree privately that anything less than a 50 percent haircut for Greece would just be cosmetic, but getting that decided by all and implementing it is not so easy."

Sports amassing is a passion that may fill your spare minutes with curiosity and supply a diversion to the on a regular basis grind. Sports activities amassing takes many varieties depending on the person who is pursuing the hobby. Many people choose to gather memorabilia from their favourite professional teams, but others acquire gadgets related to golf, fishing, and other recreation sports. Gathering requires a certain amount of area, but collectors are creative about discovering methods to show their collectibles.

You probably have a favorite professional workforce or two there are lots of gadgets you possibly can accumulate associated to those teams. As an illustration, you'll be able to create scrapbooks through which you save clippings about exciting games, favourite gamers, and special interviews. You may preserve ticket stubs and photographs in your scrapbook, too. There are stands for special balls, and jerseys look nice hanging on a hanger on the wall.

You might like to gather souvenir items from all varieties of sports. Most professional groups sell small metal pins with their insignia on them. That is such a preferred pastime that some cards are worth some huge cash, similar to a rookie card of a player like Willie Mays.

Mitt Romney Using Wife Ann Romney's Story To Connect With Voters

By STEVE PEOPLES, ASSOCIATED PRESS

(AP) MANCHESTER, N.H. ? Mitt Romney is not used to wearing an apron. But the Republican presidential candidate was not alone in cooking attire one recent morning as hundreds of potential supporters lined up for free pancakes.

Ann Romney, his wife of 42 years, stood with him, spatula in hand, wearing the same white apron and the comfortable smile of a woman who spent countless mornings flipping flapjacks for five hungry sons.

Her presence on that day, like so many others during the long campaign, is an acknowledged blessing for a 2012 White House contender who struggles to shake a robotic image. Friends and foes alike say she makes him seem more genuine.

"Believe it or not, I served pancakes nearly every morning before the kids went to school," she told supporters that morning. "I miss having my boys at home. But I do love seeing how wonderful they are now as husbands and fathers. ... I am grateful because they had such an extraordinary example."

Ann Romney is the unassuming, not-so-secret weapon in Mitt Romney's political arsenal. At a GOP gathering in Michigan on Saturday, she spoke briefly, prompting the crowd to tap their glasses and call for a toast.

The Romneys kissed, and then Ann Romney joked, ""We're not going to do an Al Gore moment," referring to a long and public kiss that Democratic presidential nominee Al Gore shared with his then-wife, Tipper, at the party's convention in 2000.

Already she's a more active participant than she was during his 2008 presidential campaign. For example, as the Romneys headed into a meeting with Michigan lawmakers, Ann Romney took note of Texas Gov. Rick Perry's uneven debate performance a few days earlier.

"It's going to happen this time," she told Republican National Committeeman Saul Anuzis. "Perry in the debate? Shocking," she said.

The Romney campaign says there will be an enhanced role for her beginning the next month, with additional public appearances, media interviews and a willingness to discuss health problems and her family's rags-to-riches story.

The 62-year-old grandmother of 16 lends an instant folksy charm to her husband. He sometimes fights to convey authenticity in the diners and backyards where presidential contests are fought in this early voting state.

He's worked to shed the image of a stiff Wall Street executive from the upper crust of America, stepping up appearances at NASCAR events, ditching his tie, shopping at Walmart, wearing skinny jeans, eating at Subway and flying on the discount carrier, Southwest Airlines.

But those efforts haven't stopped the criticism.

At a time of economic troubles, Romney's wealth and upbringing are vulnerabilities that his chief rival, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, is using against him. Perry, who grew up in a family of modest means in tiny Paint Creek, Texas, is chiding Romney for suggesting that he's a member of the middle class.

Others haven't looked kindly on Romney's efforts to portray himself as a regular guy.

"It's sort of contrived," says Brendan Steinhauser, a leading organizer for an ally of the tea party, FreedomWorks. "I've seen the whole flying Southwest thing. It's just not believable. Eating at Subway? Come on."

Enter Ann Romney.

Seemingly with no filter, she jokes about bathroom messes, cooking for a huge family and personal struggles with her husband's public life.

She reminds voters, in a most genuine way, that Mitt Romney is a father, a hand-holding husband, a high school sweetheart. He is noticeably more comfortable in her presence.

Having dealt with multiple sclerosis and breast cancer, Ann Romney also offers a powerful family story that helps her husband, the son of a governor and a graduate of both Harvard business and law schools, speak to the American dream.

"Sometimes it's like, `Mom, what did you say?' But she says things he can't say about himself, really helps humanize him," said 41-year-old Tag Romney, the couple's eldest child. "She's a very good resource. She's a good weapon. ... And she's less concerned with trying to package things so we win and more about telling the truth that this is who we are."

Political observers and voters share the characterization. They describe her, and her effect on the candidate, as a tremendous asset.

Mitt Romney often reflects on how they first crossed paths at a Michigan elementary school but didn't start dating until high school. He introduces his wife as his "sweetheart" and she introduces him as a family man and business leader. After the pancake breakfast, he didn't mention his own family's success story, depending instead on hers as he spoke to voters.

Her grandfather, the son of a coal miner from Wales, couldn't afford to send all four children to college. The children were forced to pick just one who would receive an education, Mitt Romney said. They settled on Ann's father, who would earn his diploma and later open a steel company that would employ his siblings.

Ann planned to share her story in a book during the 2008 campaign, but Tag Romney says those plans were postponed.

Political assets aside, her mere presence seems to help relax her husband. They are not shy about public affection, and he regularly squeezes his wife's hand, even when the cameras are not rolling.

"He is confident, comfortable and very effective when she is by his side or with him on a trip ? the value of which cannot be understated in dealing with the pressure of a national campaign," said Jamie Burnett, who led Romney's political operation in New Hampshire four years ago.

Ann Romney's growing role is not unprecedented in presidential politics.

Spouses often become political assets or liabilities.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich's third wife, Callista, helped create headaches for her husband's current campaign when news of a six-figure charge account at Tiffany jewelry company surfaced.

Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann's husband, Marcus, recently defended criticism that his family's counseling clinic offered to "cure" homosexuality.

On the other side, former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman's wife, Mary Kaye, is a regular attendant at political events, as is Perry's wife, Anita, who often serves as a campaign surrogate.

"Sometimes family members can really make a difference in presidential politics," said Barbara Perry, a senior fellow at the University of Virginia's Miller Center. She's not related to the candidate.

History is full of examples:

_Michelle Obama, from working-class Chicago suburbs, offered the candidate Barack Obama a more traditional family story.

_Claudia "Lady Bird" Johnson traveled throughout the South without Lyndon B. Johnson during the 1964 election to promote the Civil Rights Act.

_Robert Kennedy's mother, Rose, helped humanize her son, who was actually quite shy and didn't enjoy campaigning.

Ann Romney declined to be interviewed for this story. But expect to hear much more from her in the coming weeks.
