Art for Toddlers | Creative Kids

When it comes to kids, making art is often left to the school-aged crowd. But, thinking that your toddler is too young to do or learn anything artistic keeps them and you from having some really great fun on any given afternoon.

Toddler art definitely has its own unique patina and style. There?s no right or wrong really, just lots of great chances to let kids work on their motor skills, feel confident about creating new things and giving them a fun way to spend their time.

With the wee ones, it?s all about getting to know ? whether it be crayons, markers, paints or stamps. There are lots of fun projects that the two of you can do together, or ones you can combine with projects for older kids to keep everyone happy. But, since these wee folks are just getting started, there are some important things to consider. Here are a few recommendations for getting started with art:

Recommended supplies:

- Chubby crayons

- Drawing paper (leftover rolls of newsprint are great)

- Tape

- Thick markers

- Finger paints

- Cardboard

Activities:

1. A great start for little people ages 18 months to 2 years is coloring. This is more about getting used to how crayons feel in their hands than making anything recognizable. Tape the newsprint to the floor or a wall and let them go for it.

2. Finger Painting. It?s messy. But, oh wow is it fun. Prepare for it all by putting down a plastic table cloth and putting the kids in something you are OK with getting filthy.

3. Felt markers. This is similar to crayons. But, these can often produce some cool results when you tape a piece of paper to a high chair tray. Some kids find these more fun.

4. Stamps. Regular stamps can be tough. But, there are felts that are stamps that are very fun. Kids this age love them. It can take a while for them to get the hang of it.

5. Sorting. Some kids may not be into the art part at all, but will love sorting through markers, crayons and other tools. Fun.

The biggest thing to remember is that the end product is totally not important (and they probably will only last for about 15 minutes max). It?s all about the experience. So, hand a wee one a crayon and let them rip.

S-African govt embraces Facebook and Twitter

CAPE TOWN? (AFP) ? Nelson Mandela?s health scares send Twitter into overdrive, but South African officials made savvier use of social media to keep the world informed on the global icon?s latest medical woe.

The presidency used Facebook and Twitter to tell the public that ?Madiba,? as he is affectionately known, had been admitted on Saturday, and later to assure an increasingly worried world that he was not in danger.

?It?s a sign of a modern government embracing a modern era. The government has been more organised this time, and their social media activities are an example of that,? Matthew Buckland, publisher of South African technology trend site Memeburn, told AFP.

?By the presidency breaking the news themselves and releasing the statement on Twitter, people followed by retweeting the presidency?s statement and referring back to this as the original source of the news,? he said.

?This is exactly how it should be handled as opposed to mass confusion and multiple, contradicting sources and conjecture.?

When Mandela, 93, was hospitalised last year for a respiratory infection, a virtual news blackout sparked panic in a public relations blunder for those handling the legacy of one of the world?s best-known people.

This time the presidency took control, announcing his admission and giving an update.

?Im glad Mr nelson Mandela is Ohk,? one social media user responded with relief. ?Now i can finally study.?

The efforts did not go unnoticed by a nation that increasingly uses smartphones and the Internet.

?Get well soon Mr Madiba, tanx 4 informing us Mr President,? applauded a Facebook poster in typically casual social media lingo.

?I?m not a Zuma supporter, but thank you zuma for let us know about MR. MANDELA. A great deed you did,? said another.

Mandela is adored in South Africa for leading a racially divided country into democracy and is exalted internationally as a symbol of forgiveness and freedom.

Any hint of his ill-health immediately goes global, with hip hop giant Russell Simmons urging prayers and Manchester United?s Rio Ferdinand calling him the ?most inspirational man alive? on Saturday.

The detail-hungry media has offered praise but also criticism. As officials refused to say where Mandela was hospitalised or divulge exact details, unconfirmed reports that he had undergone hernia surgery flowed furiously.

?Last time it was a mess,? wrote BBC correspondent Andrew Harding on the British broadcaster?s website on Saturday.

?This time the presidency has been ahead of the social media rumours that fuelled much of the confusion in 2011, but the instinct to deny, rather than to say ?no comment,? remains strong, and as before, impatient and contradictory speculation has started to emerge.?

South Africa?s Sunday Times said the announcement was a substantial if terse improvement, yet warned of signs that similar panic could arise and that ?credible, detailed? information was needed to avoid wild speculation.

?The authorities must also accept that there is unprecedented global interest in Mandela?s condition and that new media platforms spread rumours rapidly,? it said.

The Sunday Independent said the secrecy was inconsistent with the former president?s legacy and ?negates Mandela?s principles of openness.?

The tension between the inquisitive role of the press and the state?s gatekeeping was healthy and unlikely to go away, Buckland said.

?It?s difficult to know where that line is in terms of what they must reveal and what they should hold back,? he said, adding that Mandela?s privacy had to be respected despite his being a public figure.

?It is a balance, and in this case it feels as if the government got the balance right.?

North London derby highlights EPL return

London, England (My Sportsbook) - After a week off to accommodate a slate of FA Cup fixtures, the English Premier League returns to action with the latest installment of the highly entertaining North London derby.

Arsenal and Tottenham will meet at the Emirates on Sunday, and Spurs will be looking to replicate the result from the corresponding fixture last season, a match that saw them achieve a rare feat.

After surrendering two goals by halftime, Tottenham stormed back with second- half goals from Gareth Bale, Rafael Van der Vaart, and Younes Kaboul to claim a 3-2 win, its first at Arsenal in 17 years. The victory also snapped a 68- game winless run of away games against the "big four" clubs (Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester United).

This season has seen the balance of power shift into a two-horse race between Manchester City and Manchester United for the Premiership title, but it has also seen Tottenham become the more successful North London club.

Spurs have outdone their fiercest rivals this term, faring 10 points better than the Gunners to sit third in the league with 53 points on the season.

Both teams have taken seven points from a possible nine in their last three Premier League contests, but they both suffered setbacks in the FA Cup last weekend - Arsenal fell to Sunderland in a 2-0 loss at the Stadium of Light while Tottenham was held to a scoreless draw at Stevenage.

Arsenal is in more of a rut given its 4-0 loss at AC Milan in Champions League play last week, but according to talisman Robin van Persie, Sunday's match against Tottenham is coming at the perfect time.

"What better way to set things straight again than to beat Spurs?" the captain told Arsenal's Official Matchday Programme. "I'd rather be playing them now than on any other day, and we know that a win is absolutely vital.

"They're above us for the first time in many years but it's in our hands to change the way things are going, win the game and start moving closer to them."

Tottenham has not finished above Arsenal in the Premier League since 1995, and three points on Sunday would be the first step for the Gunners in their attempt to preserve that streak.

"A draw will not be a good result for us [on Sunday], either in our bid to catch up with Spurs or in our efforts to fight off our other challengers for a Champions League place," said the Dutchman.

Manchester United will also be in action on Sunday. The Red Devils advanced, on aggregate, to the Round of 16 in the Europa League on Thursday despite losing to Ajax, 2-1, on the night. They will hope to bounce back in a potentially tricky fixture as they head to Carrow Road to face a Norwich City side that has won two straight matches in Premier League play.

Sunday's final fixture will see Stoke City welcome Swansea City to the Britannia. The two sides are level in the table on 30 points, but the Potters have not fared too well recently as they will be looking to snap a four-game losing skid.

Saturday could prove to be a pivotal day for a couple of EPL clubs.

Manchester City will host Blackburn at the Etihad as the Citizens look to pile the pressure on Manchester United. With a win, City can extend its lead atop the table to five points.

Andre Villas-Boas will be under the microscope from here on out after Chelsea faltered in the Champions League midweek. The Blues lost 3-1 at Napoli and will look to rebound against second-from-bottom Bolton at Stamford Bridge.

Newly appointed caretaker manager Terry Connor faces a tough task in his first match in charge of Wolverhampton as Wolves head to SportsDirect Arena to face sixth-place Newcastle United.

Elsewhere on Saturday, QPR hopes to climb further away from the relegation zone as it hosts Fulham at Loftus Road, West Bromwich goes for its second straight win when it welcomes Sunderland to the Hawthorns, and Wigan looks to emerge from the cellar with three points at the DW Stadium against Aston Villa.

Another classic derby was slated for Saturday as Liverpool was scheduled to host Everton at Anfield, but it has been postponed due to Liverpool's involvement in the League Cup Final.

NY mayor defends intelligence-gathering on Muslim

NEW YORK?New York's mayor served notice Friday that his police department will do everything in its power to root out terrorists in the U.S., even if it means sending officers outside the city limits or placing law-abiding Muslims under scrutiny.

"We just cannot let our guard down again," Mayor Michael Bloomberg warned.

The mayor laid out his doctrine for keeping the city safe during his weekly radio show following a week of criticism of a secret police department effort to monitor mosques in several cities and keep files on Muslim student groups at colleges in Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and upstate New York.

Several college administrators and politicians have complained that the intelligence-gathering?exposed in a series of stories by The Associated Press?pried too deeply into the lives of innocent people.

With about 1,000 officers dedicated to intelligence and counterterrorism, the New York Police Department has one of the most aggressive domestic intelligence operations in the U.S. Its methods have stirred debate in legal circles over whether it has crossed the line and violated the civil liberties of Muslims.

In perhaps his most vigorous defense yet of some of the NYPD's anti-terrorism efforts, Bloomberg said it is "legal," "appropriate" and "constitutional" for police to keep a close eye on Muslim communities that terrorists might use as a base to strike the city. And he said investigators must pursue "leads and threats

wherever they come from," even across state lines.

"It would just be naive to think we should stop following threats when they get to the border," Bloomberg said.

In the past few days, the department has come under fire from university officials and others, including the president of Yale University, after the AP revealed that police agents had monitored Muslim student groups around the Northeast and had sent an undercover agent on a whitewater rafting trip with some college students.

More criticism came from public officials in New Jersey after another AP report detailed a secret effort by the NYPD to photograph every mosque in Newark and catalog Muslim businesses.

That operation was an extension of a similar tracking effort within New York's city limits. Plainclothes officers swept through Muslim neighborhoods, photographing mosques and eavesdropping on businesses. Informants reported on what they heard inside mosques, including the sermons. Police monitored and kept files on Muslims who Americanized their names. They also infiltrated Muslim student groups.

Critics have said it isn't appropriate for the police to spy on citizens without reason to believe they committed a crime.

The American Civil Liberties Union issued a statement Friday accusing the NYPD of turning the city into a "surveillance state."

Faiza Patel, co-director of a civil rights program at the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University's law school, said guidelines in federal court rulings do not allow the department to hold on to files detailing the conversations of mosque worshippers "unless the information relates to potential terrorist or criminal activity."

Rep. Rush Holt, a New Jersey Democrat, questioned why the NYPD was assembling volumes of information on people who weren't suspected of breaking any laws.

"It's bad policing. It's profiling, fishing expeditions. They're looking around saying, 'Surely in this community there must be bad people. If we look long enough, we'll find them,'" Holt said.

Columbia University's president, Lee Bollinger, wrote an open letter Friday saying the NYPD shouldn't have been monitoring the websites of Muslim student groups at the school unless one of them had been suspected of a crime. Bollinger said the government's tactics could have a "chilling effect" on free speech and association.

"Such an intrusion into the normal, daily activities of our students raises deeply troubling questions that should concern us all," said Bollinger, a First Amendment scholar and former law school dean.

Anum Ahmed, an undergraduate student at New York University, said at a roundtable discussion Friday that she feels nervous now when doing simple things, like online research for her Arabic class.

"Even looking up words on Google Translate," she said. "I'm thinking, like, the NYPD is surveilling what I'm searching on the Internet."

Ahmed said she even feels frightened talking on the phone to her mother. "Sometimes I'm like, 'Should I be saying this out loud?" she said. "I don't feel like I'm protected. I'm being watched. And there's a big difference between the two."

Bloomberg said the NYPD would continue to do "everything that the law permits us to do" to detect terrorists operating in the U.S. before they have a chance to act.

He warned of dire consequences if the city fails to detect plots, citing the 9/11 attacks and the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center, which was carried out by followers of Omar Abdel-Rahman, a radical sheik who recruited jihadists from Brooklyn mosques.

"We are not going to repeat the mistakes that we made after the 1993 bombing," the mayor said. "We cannot slack in our vigilance. The threat was real. The threat is real. The threat is not going away."

Newark Mayor Corey Booker was among several New Jersey officials who said they were surprised and concerned to learn that the NYPD had broadly monitored Muslims and mosques in that state.

Bloomberg acknowledged that Booker himself hadn't been briefed by the NYPD, but said the Newark police department had been informed. In any case, he said, it is "100 percent legal" for city police officers to operate in other states.

"You have to also remember an awful lot of the 9/11 hijackers stayed in New Jersey for extended periods of time, training, planning their attacks," Bloomberg said.

Berkeley Lab researchers identify structure of key control element behind protein misfolding that can lead to disease

The gold standard for nanotechnology is nature's own proteins. These biomolecular nanomachines macromolecules forged from peptide chains of amino acids - are able to fold themselves into a dazzling multitude of shapes and forms that enable them to carry out an equally dazzling multitude of functions fundamental to life. As important as protein folding is to virtually all biological systems, the mechanisms behind this process have remained a mystery. The fog, however, is being lifted.

A team of researchers with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab), using the exceptionally bright and powerful x-ray beams of the Advanced Light Source, have determined the crystal structure of a critical control element within chaperonin, the protein complex responsible for the correct folding of other proteins. The incorrect or "misfolding" of proteins has been linked to many diseases, including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and some forms of cancer.

"We identified, for the first time, a region within group II chaperonins we call the nucleotide-sensing loop, which detects the presence of the ATP molecules that fuel the chaperonin folding motion," says Paul Adams, a bioengineer with Berkeley Lab's Physical Biosciences Division and leading authority on x-ray crystallography who led this work. ""We knew that ATP hydrolysis is important for promoting protein folding, but we did not know how ATP activity was sensed and communicated."

Adams is the corresponding author of a paper in The EMBO Journal that describes this study, which was performed in collaboration with colleagues at MIT and Stanford. The paper is titled "Mechanism of nucleotide sensing in group II Chaperonins." Co-authoring this paper were Jose Pereira, Corie Ralston, Nicholai Douglas, Ramya Kumar, Tom Lopez, Ryan McAndrew, Kelly Knee, Jonathan King and Judith Frydman.

Chaperonins promote the proper folding of newly translated proteins and proteins that have been stress-denatured meaning they've lost their structure - by encapsulating them inside a protective chamber formed from two rings of molecular complexes stacked back-to-back. There are two classes of chaperonins, group I found in prokaryotes; and group II found in eukaryotes. Much of the basic architecture has been evolutionarily preserved across these two classes but they do differ in how the protective chamber is opened to accept proteins and closed to fold them. Whereas group I chaperonins require a detachable ring-shaped molecular lid to open and close the chamber, group II chaperonins have a built-in lid.

"We obtained crystal structures at sufficient resolution to allow us to examine, in detail, the effects that changes in nucleotides states have on ATP binding and hydrolysis in group II chaperonins," Adams says. "From these structures we see that the nucleotide-sensing loop monitors ATP binding sites for changes and communicates this information throughout the chaperonin. Functional analysis further suggests that the nucleotide-sensing loop region uses this information to control the rate of ATP binding and hydrolysis, which in turn controls the timing of the protein folding reaction."

The double-ring chaperonin complex features multiple subunits that are grouped into three domains - apical, intermediate and equatorial. For group II chaperonins, the closing of the lid for protein-folding causes all three domains to rotate as a single rigid body, resulting in conformational changes to the chamber that enable the proteins within to be folded. The synchronized rotation of the chaperonin domains is dependent upon the communication to all the subunits that is provided by the nucleotide-sensing loop. In identifying the nucleotide-sensing loop and its controlling role in group II chaperonin protein-folding, Adams and his colleagues may have opened a new avenue by which modified protein-folding activities could engineered.

"The strong relationship between incorrectly folded proteins and pathological states is well documented," Adams says. "Since ATP hydrolysis is required for protein folding, it could be possible to engineer a nucleotide-sensing loop that promotes slower or faster protein folding activity in a given chaperonin. This could, for example, be used to increase the protein folding activity of human chaperonin, or perhaps reduce the cellular accumulation of misfolded proteins that can cause disease and other problems."

A key factor that enabled Adams and his colleagues to solve the three-dimensional crystal structure of the nucleotide sensing loop and determine its pivotal role in the protein folding of group II chaperonins was the unique protein crystallography capabilities of the Berkeley Center for Structural Biology. The BCSB operates five protein crystallography beamlines for Berkeley Lab's Advanced Light Source (ALS), a DOE Office of Science national user facility for synchrotron radiation, and the first of the world's third generation light sources. For this particular study, Adams and his colleagues used ALS beamlines 8.2.1 and 8.2.2, which are powered by a superconducting bending magnetic to yield higher energy x-rays that are optimized for the study of single crystals of biological molecules.

In this study, Adams and his colleagues studied an archaeon chaperonin. In their followup research, they will apply what they have learned to study the chaperonin known as TRiC, which is the human chaperonin.

"We believe that chaperonins have evolved to work on specific substrates and that the rates of protein folding may vary greatly between chaperonins in different organisms," Adams says. "The structural and biochemical identification of the changes related to ATP hydrolysis provides important insights into the complex puzzle of protein folding for each type of chaperonin."

Cable cos. shut down interactive ad venture

NEW YORK (AP) ? The country's largest cable TV companies are shutting down the bulk of a venture that let viewers interact with TV ads, laying off 120 employees.

Four-year-old Canoe Ventures made it possible for viewers of eight cable networks, including AMC, Bravo and Discovery, to request information by mail from TV advertisers by pressing a button on the remote. It was accessible in 25 million households.

However, the technology didn't catch on with advertisers, prompting the shutdown.

The firm said Wednesday that it will close its New York headquarters and lay off most of its staff over the new few months.

Canoe will keep 30 to 35 employees in Denver to work on advertising systems for video-on-demand services. That includes services that cable companies are rolling out for viewing on tablet computers, phones and personal computers.

CEO Kathy Timko is among those laid off. She was replaced by former Chief Technology Officer Joel Hassell.

Canoe was set up by Comcast Corp., Cox Communications Inc., Time Warner Cable Inc., Charter Communications Inc., Cablevision Systems Corp. and Bright House Networks.

The shutdown of Canoe's interactive advertising system doesn't mean that type of ad will go away completely. Cable companies have their own interactive ad systems they use for small, local campaigns.

Early on, Canoe had a second mission: to make it possible to target cable-TV advertising down to the neighborhood level. That plan was scrapped in 2009 due to technical difficulties.

Wednesday's shutdown was reported earlier on the website of Multichannel News, a pay-TV trade magazine.
