LG will launch the world's first 55-inch curved OLED HDTV (update)

We heard that the curved OLED HDTV prototypes LG showed at CES would be coming soon, and now it's official. A Korean press release indicates we can expect the 55EA9800 to launch in the next month, with shipments starting in June. According to the specs, its 4.3mm depth results in a weight of just 17kg, probably thanks to a carbon-fiber reinforced frame. Like an IMAX theater screen, the edges are curved towards the viewer to provide a more immersive feeling. Given the fact that we're still waiting for LG's flat OLED TVs to see a wider release we doubt it will arrive on US shelves any time soon, but until then you can check out our in-person pics from CES below, and a video after the break.

Update: LG sent over the English press release, which confirms pre-orders start today at more than 1,400 retail locations with a price of 15 million Korean won ($13,500), a healthy bump over the standard version's $10K MSRP. Release dates and pricing for non-Korean markets are coming "in the months ahead," check after the break to read all the details first hand.

Newborn's Placenta May Predict Autism Risk, Study Suggests ...

THURSDAY, April 25 (HealthDay News) ? Autism risk may be spotted at birth by examining placentas for abnormalities, new research suggests.

?We can look at the placenta at birth and determine the chance of being at risk for autism with extremely high reliability,? said Dr. Harvey Kliman, a research scientist at Yale University.

One of 88 U.S. children has an autism spectrum disorder, the umbrella name for complex brain development disorders marked by problems with social interaction and communication, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The earlier autism is treated, the better the outcome. But children typically aren?t diagnosed until behavioral symptoms begin, perhaps at age 2 or 3 years, or even later. Kliman said the children identified as at risk at birth might benefit from early treatment.

For the new study, published online April 25 in the journal Biological Psychiatry, Kliman and his team examined 117 placentas from newborns whose mothers already had one or more children with some form of autism, which put the infant at higher risk for the disorder. The researchers compared those samples with placenta samples from 100 women who already had one or more typically developing children.

During pregnancy, the placenta keeps the unborn baby?s blood supply separate from the mother?s while providing the baby with oxygen and nutrients. At delivery, the placenta, also called the afterbirth, follows the baby out of the womb.

The placentas from women whose older children had autism were markedly different from the others, Kliman?s team found. They zeroed in on abnormal folds and abnormal cell growth in the placenta, known as trophoblast inclusions.

The placentas from the at-risk pregnancies were eight times more likely to have two or more of these abnormal folds than samples from not-at-risk deliveries. Placentas with four or more of the inclusions predicted an infant with at least a 74 percent probability of being at risk for autism, the researchers said.

?There were no [placentas from pregnancies not at risk] that had more than two of the folds,? Kliman said.

The study only predicted risk of autism, however, not actual autism. The researchers will continue to follow the children.

The testing can?t be done before delivery, Kliman said. ?You need enough placenta [to examine].?

But the test could help spot at-risk children much earlier than is now possible, Kliman suggested. ?There is no way [currently] to know at birth that your child might have autism,? he said. ?If you know you have a child who is at risk for autism at birth, you are ahead of the game.? Interventions can begin early, when the brain is more open to change.

How the folds in the placenta relate to autism risk isn?t clear, Kliman said. He and others speculated that the abnormalities in the placentas and the brains of the children affected with autism are marked by increased cellular growth, which then leads to the unusual folding. ?The heads of children with autism are bigger,? he said. Their brains grow rapidly early in life.

?I?d like to see it as a routine test,? Kliman said. The test is labor intensive and requires pathology, however, and Kliman estimated it could cost $2,000 or more.

This isn?t the first study to link placental abnormalities with autism risk, said Geraldine Dawson, chief science officer for Autism Speaks, an advocacy and research group. ?However, it is one of the largest studies to confirm this finding,? she said.

But more research is needed to confirm the findings, she said.

It is too soon to suggest this as a routine test, said Dr. Daniel Coury, medical director of the group?s Autism Treatment Network and chief of developmental and behavioral pediatrics at Nationwide Children?s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. He praised the study, but also said more research is needed to duplicate the findings.

?Being able to identify those infants at greater risk so we can target our interventions is really big news,? he said.

The study was supported by the National Institutes of Health; the MIND Institute at the University of California, Davis; Yale University Reproductive and Placental Research Unit; and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The researchers don?t hold patents on the procedure or have financial interests in it.

Samsung's Galaxy S4 is a good phone, not a great one: reviewers

(Reuters) - Samsung's newest Galaxy S4 smartphone is just a revamped version of its top-selling S3 phone with a bigger screen and a few software gimmicks, reviewers said.

"The Galaxy is still a beautiful, high-horsepower Android phone," New York Times' columnist David Pogue wrote.

"But basically, it's an updated Galaxy S3. If this were Apple, who adds the letter S to denote a slightly upgraded model ("iPhone 4S," for example), Samsung might have called this phone the Galaxy S3S," he wrote. (http://r.reuters.com/cef67t)

Samsung unveiled S4 in March in New York. It sports a 5-inch screen, 1.9 GHz quad-core processor and a 13 megapixel camera. It runs on Google Inc's Android platform.

The S3 comes with a 4.8 inch screen, a 1.4 GHz quad core processor and an 8 megapixel camera.

Samsung has so far sold more than 40 million S3 smartphones, rivaling that of Apple Inc's iPhones.

"(The S4) looks for all the world like the Galaxy S III ? despite having a bigger screen and more horsepower, at 7.9mm and 4.6 ounces it's actually imperceptibly thinner and lighter than the S III. But copying the S III wasn't a good idea." Verge's David Pierce said. (http://r.reuters.com/taf67t)

AllThingsD's Walt Mossberg said the S4 is a good phone, just not a great one and urged readers to consider the more polished-looking, and quite capable, HTC One, rather than defaulting to the latest Samsung offering.

"It's an evolution of the prior model and despite some improvements, it still is especially weak in the software Samsung adds to basic Android. I found Samsung's software often gimmicky, duplicative of standard Android apps, or, in some cases, only intermittently functional," he said.

Galaxy S4 will roll out over the next week on the AT&T and T-Mobile networks in the United States.

"This isn't a phone that's going to convert an iPhone user, and current Galaxy S III owners aren't going to miss out on a whole lot as far as features go," CNN's Adrian Covert said. (http://r.reuters.com/kaf67t)

WWDC tickets go on sale, sell out in two minutes

The tickets for this WWDC 2013 have come and gone in record time, with passes for this year?s event selling out in an astounding two minutes, after going on sale at 10 AM Pacific. The speed at which the tickets sold out can at least be partially attributed to the fact that Apple pre-announced when they woud go on sale, something that they haven?t done in past years.

The time that it has taken for WWDC tickets to sell out every year has decreased steadily for a number of years. Last year's tickets sold out in two hours, and while many expected them to move even faster this year, it?s doubtful that anyone expected them to go quite this quickly.

Dennis Quaid came into his own as one of the astronauts in 1983's The Right Stuff, and has since been one of America's hardest-working, most consistent actors, appearing in everything from Innerspace and Wyatt Earp to Far from Heaven and Traffic. (And lest we forget his gallant, if doomed, effort to hold together Movie 43.) This week he plays dad to Zac Efron's rebellious son in Ramin Bahrani's At Any Price, and with the film opening in limited release, we had a chance to sit down with Quaid recently and talk about his favorite movies.

I think my favorite movie is Lawrence of Arabia. To me, it's just about a perfect film; in the performances and what it means to me. I saw it as a boy -- and I just can't stop watching it, every time it comes on. All David Lean's movies, really. I love Doctor Zhivago, too.

Five Easy Pieces is a film that hit me as a young man. Most of my favorite movies, I think, come from the '70s, in that period where I really wanted to become an actor. Jack Nicholson's performance in that... it's a film that would never be done by a major studio today.

There's Bonnie and Clyde. That's a film that kind of started the new wave in the '70s. That was incredible. I saw that when I was in about the eighth grade, I think. Those characters, and also the history of Bonnie and Clyde, you know... it was something new. I remember, in fact, Bonnie and Clyde came out in either late Spring or early Summer, and then it was pulled. I think it flopped when it came out, and then they brought it back out in the Fall. I mean, I loved it when I first saw it; then they brought it back out in the Fall and it was a huge success.

Scarecrow (Jerry Schatzberg, 1973; 71% Tomatometer)

There's another movie back then called Scarecrow, with Gene Hackman and Al Pacino. They play two hobos that are going across America to open up a car wash. Both performances are just amazing.

I'm gonna say The Godfather -- the first one. That's another movie that's just about a perfect film, you know, from a great filmmaker in his prime.

High-nutrition and disease-resistant purple and yellow-fleshed potato clones obtained

Apr. 24, 2013 ? The Basque Institute for Agricultural Research and Development, Neiker-Tecnalia, has created four new potato clones which are characterised by their high antioxidant content, their good production both in size and number of tubers, as well as by their resistance to the usual diseases of this crop. The clones were obtained by natural methods through crossing varieties from South America with commercial varieties used in Europe. The result was three clones of the purple-fleshed potato and one with a markedly yellow flesh. The attractiveness and nutritional value of these types of potato make them a product highly regarded by professionals in gastronomy and by the public in general.

The work of creating the clones is part of the Potato Genetic Enhancement Programme drawn up by Neiker-Tecnalia. The research was led by agricultural engineer Ms Raquel L?pez, being the basis for her PhD thesis, and was presented at the University of the Basque Country. The aim of this specialist was to find potatoes which brought together the features of the South American varieties (their colour, resistance to pathogens and their nutritional and organoleptic properties) with those of the commercial varieties employed in our latitudes and characterized by their high productivity.

The Neiker-Tecnalia researchers brought 37 varieties from the Centro Internacional de la Papa, based in Peru. These native South American varieties were crossed in the greenhouse with commercial varieties, using natural procedures. The selection of and crossing between individuals with the best traits has given rise to the four clones mentioned. For the moment, these involve advanced clones and not commercial varieties, as they are not registered at the Spanish Office for Plant Varieties (OEVV in the Spanish acronym) or the European Community Plant Variety Office (CPVO). The process of registering is a long one, lasting about 15 years.

The varieties imported from Peru have a very low productivity in our latitudes, both in size and the number of tubers. Nevertheless, with the process of crossing and selection, the final clones having acceptable productivity has been achieved.

Nutritional value and resistant to pathogens

The four clones obtained are characterised by the high presence of antioxidants compounds, making them very attractive from a nutritional perspective. The three purple-flesh clones contain a large quantity of anthocyanins ? a highly appreciated pigment in the preparation of high added value foods ?, while the yellow flesh variety have carotenes ? essential chemical components for the diet ? and in greater quantities than in the usual commercial varieties.

Resistance to diseases is another of the achievements. The four clones show certain resistance to the pathogens analysed, such as the potato virus Y, as well as the Pectobacterium atrosepticum bacteria, which weaken the vegetable and considerably undermine its production.

Researcher Raquel L?pez highlights the importance of taking into account the clones achieved. ?It is beneficial for European producers to have varieties of purple flesh potato that are adapted to the climatological conditions of this continent. Moreover, these varieties incorporate natural antioxidant compounds, which are nutritionally and visually attractive, both for restaurant professionals and for end consumers?.

European rate cut hopes fuel market rally

LONDON (AP) ? Hopes that the European Central Bank will cut interest rates next month to support a fading economy fueled a rally in stock markets on Tuesday.

Investors, particularly in Europe, rushed to buy stocks and bonds on expectations that the ECB will opt to cut its main interest rate to a record low of 0.50 percent at its meeting next Thursday from the current 0.75 percent.

The speculation was triggered by a survey into manufacturing activity among the 17 European Union countries that use the euro. The PMI survey from Markit fell another 0.3 points in April to 46.5 ? anything below 50 indicates a contraction.

In particular, the survey showed that it wasn't just the weaker, indebted countries that are struggling. Germany, Europe's biggest economy and its export powerhouse, weakened too.

"This is now going to prompt talk again of an ECB rate cut, given that Bundesbank head, Jens Weidmann, conceded recently that a rate cut would be considered if we see further worsening in the economic data," said Craig Erlam, market analyst at Alpari. The Bundesbank is Germany's central bank.

In Europe, Germany's DAX rallied 2.4 percent to close at 7,658.21 while the CAC-40 in France rose 3.6 percent to 3,783.05. The FTSE 100 index of leading British shares rose 2 percent to 6,406.12.

The market optimism helped lower interest rates on government bonds for financially weak countries like Italy and Spain. The yield on Italy's benchmark 10-year bond fell a further 0.12 percentage points to 3.91 percent while Spain's fell 0.24 percentage points to 4.26 percent. Neither country's borrowing rates have been this low since late 2010.

Wall Street was solid too, with the Dow Jones industrial average up 1 percent at 14,716, while the broader S&P 500 index rose 1.1 percent to 1,579.18.

A raft of earnings helped shore up the U.S. open. DuPont, the chemical maker, reported first-quarter profits that more than doubled as its agricultural unit did brisk business. Travelers insurance and Coach soared after strong reports.

The main point of interest on the earnings front will be when Apple reports after the markets close. The company has seen its share price take a battering over the past few months amid mounting concerns over its product line and tough competition.

"With the stock nearly 50 percent off all-time highs, the question is how much more scope is there on the downside," said Fawad Razaqzada, market strategist at GFT Markets.

Earlier, Chinese shares underperformed after a downbeat manufacturing survey renewed concerns over the world's second-largest economy.

A preliminary survey by HSBC Corp. found that China's manufacturing growth slowed in April, in a further sign that the economy is slowing.

HSBC's monthly purchasing managers' index ? a gauge of business activity ? fell to a worse-than-expected 50.5 from March's 51.6 on a 100-point scale. That means it's growing but only just ? anything below 50 would have signaled a contraction in activity.

"Just as in 2012, Chinese growth is failing to live up to the market's high expectations," said Rebecca O'Keeffe, head of investment at Interactive Investor.

The survey hit Chinese shares particularly hard, with the country's Shanghai Composite Index tumbling 2.6 percent to 2,184.54 and the Shenzhen Composite Index falling 2.7 percent to 923.42. Hong Kong's Hang Seng shed 1.1 percent to 21,806.61.

Elsewhere in Asia, Japan's benchmark Nikkei index slipped as the yen gained ground against the dollar. The Nikkei 225 in Tokyo fell 0.3 percent to close at 13,529.65.

In currency markets, the dollar recovered to rise 0.2 percent against the Japanese yen, to 99.40 yen. The euro fell 0.4 percent against the dollar, to $1.3011.

Oil prices were also depressed following the disappointing economic data, with the benchmark New York rate down 3 cents at $89.16 a barrel.

U.N. nuclear watchdog says Iran meeting set for mid-May

VIENNA (Reuters) - The U.N. nuclear watchdog said on Tuesday it will hold a new meeting with Iran on May 15 aimed at enabling its inspectors to resume a stalled investigation into suspected nuclear bomb research by the Islamic state.

The International Atomic Energy Agency has been trying for more than a year to coax Iran into granting IAEA officials the access to sites, documents and officials they want for their inquiry. Tehran says its nuclear program is entirely peaceful.

The May meeting will be the 10th round of talks since early 2012 in the search for a framework accord between the two sides that would set the terms for how the IAEA should conduct its inquiry, so far without success.

Western diplomats accuse Iran of stonewalling and some say the IAEA may soon need to get tougher with Tehran, but the Vienna-based U.N. agency has said it is committed to continuing dialogue with Iranian officials.

"The agency and Iran have agreed to hold further talks in Vienna on 15 May," IAEA spokeswoman Gill Tudor said.

The meeting is "aimed at finalizing a structured approach to resolving outstanding issues related to the possible military dimensions of Iran's nuclear program", she said.

It will take place about a week before the IAEA is expected to issue its next report on Iran's nuclear program, and ahead of a June 3-7 meeting of the IAEA's 35-nation governing board, when the Iranian nuclear issue will again be on the agenda.

The IAEA-Iran talks are separate from, but have an important bearing on, diplomatic negotiations between Tehran and six world powers aimed at a broad settlement to the decade-old dispute and reduce the risk of a new Middle East war.

Western powers suspect Iran is trying to develop the capability to produce nuclear weapons under the guise of a declared civilian atomic energy program. Iran denies this, saying it seeks only electricity from uranium enrichment.

But its refusal to curb sensitive nuclear activity with both civilian and military applications and its lack of openness with IAEA inspectors have drawn U.N. and Western sanctions.

Israel, widely believed to be the only nuclear-armed power in the Middle East, has long hinted at possible air strikes to deny Iran any means to make a nuclear bomb.

Feds delay plolicy to allow small knives on planes

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Airline passengers will have to leave their knives at home after all. And their bats and golf clubs.

A policy change scheduled to go into effect this week that would have allowed passengers to carry small knives, bats, and other sports equipment onto airliners will be delayed, federal officials said Monday.

The delay is necessary to accommodate feedback from an advisory committee made up of aviation industry, consumer, and law enforcement officials, the Transportation Security Administration said in a brief statement. The statement said the delay is temporary, but gave no indication how long it might be.

TSA Administrator John Pistole proposed the policy change last month, saying it would free up the agency to concentrate on protecting against greater threats. TSA screeners confiscate about 2,000 small folding knives from passengers every day.

The proposal immediately drew fierce opposition from flight attendant unions and federal air marshals, who said the knives can be dangerous in the hands of the wrong passengers. Some airlines and members of Congress also urged TSA to reconsider its position.

The delay announced by TSA doesn't go far enough, a coalition of unions representing 90,000 flight attendants nationwide said Monday.

"All knives should be banned from planes permanently," the group said in a statement.

Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., who opposed the policy, said TSA's decision is an admission "that permitting knives on planes is a bad idea." He also called for a permanent ban.

Rep. Ed Markey, D-Mass., another opponent, said he will continue to push TSA to drop the proposal entirely.

"People with radical ideas can use everyday objects to cause great harm," Markey said. "If there is an opportunity to decrease risks to Americans, we have a duty to protect our citizens and disallow knives from being taken onto planes."

The proposed policy would have permitted folding knives with blades that are 2.36 inches (6 centimeters) or less in length and are less than 1/2-inch (1-centimeter) wide. The policy was aimed at allowing passengers to carry pen knives, corkscrews with small blades and other small knives.

Passengers also would have been be allowed to bring onboard as part of their carry-on luggage novelty-sized baseball bats less than 24 inches long, toy plastic bats, billiard cues, ski poles, hockey sticks, lacrosse sticks and two golf clubs, the agency said.

Security standards adopted by the International Civil Aviation Organization, a U.N. agency, already call for passengers to be able to carry those items. Those standards are non-binding, but many countries follow them.

The proposal didn't affect box cutters, razor blades and knives that don't fold or that have molded grip handles, which are prohibited.

Passengers were prohibited from carrying the small knives onboard planes after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Some of the terrorists in those attacks used box cutters to intimidate passengers and airline crew members.

It's unlikely in these days of hardened cockpit doors and other preventative measures that the small folding knives could be used by terrorists to take over a plane, Pistole told Congress last month.

There has been a gradual easing of some of the security measures applied to passengers after the 9/11 attacks. In 2005, the TSA changed its policies to allow passengers to carry on airplanes small scissors, knitting needles, tweezers, nail clippers and up to four books of matches. The move came as the agency turned its focus toward keeping explosives off planes, because intelligence officials believed that was the greatest threat to commercial aviation.

And in September 2011, the TSA no longer required children 12 years old and under to remove their shoes at airport checkpoints. The agency recently issued new guidelines for travelers 75 and older so they can avoid removing shoes and light jackets when they go through airport security checkpoints.

Apr. 21, 2013 ? Regular use of low-dose aspirin may prevent the progression of breast cancer, according to results of a study by researchers at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo., and the University of Kansas Medical Center.

The study found that aspirin slowed the growth of breast cancer cell lines in the lab and significantly reduced the growth of tumors in mice. The age-old headache remedy also exhibits the ability to prevent tumor cells from spreading.

The lead author of the study, Gargi Maity, a postdoctoral fellow who works in the cancer research unit at the VA Medical Center, will present the team's findings on Sunday, April 21, at the annual meeting of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, which is being held in conjunction with the Experimental Biology 2013 conference in Boston. The senior author is Sushanta Banerjee, director of the cancer research unit and a professor at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan.

The role of aspirin, or acetylsalicylic acid, in preventing and treating cancer has intrigued researchers since the late 1980s, when an Australian study found that people who regularly used aspirin were less likely to develop colorectal cancer. Aspirin use also has been shown to reduce the risk of squamous cell esophageal cancer and prostate cancer.

Anecdotal evidence indicated that breast cancer was less likely to return in women who took aspirin to lower their risk of heart attack or stroke. But the science behind this relationship is not well understood.

The VA study found that aspirin may interfere with cancer cells' ability to find an aggressive, more primordial state. In the mouse model the researchers used, cancer cells treated with aspirin formed no or only partial stem cells, which are believed to fuel the growth and spread of tumors.

Banerjee, a professor of medicine in division of hematology and oncology, says first-line chemotherapy treatments do not destroy stem cells. Eventually, the tumor will grow again. "If you don't target the stemness, it is known you will not get any effect," he says. "It will relapse."

In lab tests, aspirin blocked the proliferation of two different breast cancer lines. One of the lines tested is often called triple-negative breast cancer, a less common but more difficult treat form of the disease. "We are mainly interested in triple negative breast cancer, because the prognosis is very poor," Banerjee says.

Triple-negative breast cancers, which will be addressed in a special thematic program at the ASBMB annual meeting, lack receptors for estrogen, progesterone and Her2. Aspirin also may improve the effectiveness of current treatments for women whose breast cancers are hormone-receptor positive. In the team's study, aspirin enhanced the effect of tamoxifen, the usual drug therapy for hormone-receptor positive breast cancer.

Aspirin is used in the treatment of a number of different conditions. Banerjee says its ability to attack multiple metabolic pathways is what makes it potentially useful in the fight against cancer. "Cancer is not a single-gene disease," he says. "Multiple genes are involved."

Aspirin is a medicine with side effects, including gastrointestinal bleeding. Researchers will continue to explore if the positive effects of regular use of the drug outweigh the risks. In 2012, the National Cancer Institute asked scientists to design studies that would illuminate the mechanisms by which aspirin and drugs with other uses appear to reduce the risk of cancer or improve the prognosis for those diagnosed with the disease. Banerjee says his lab will apply for one of the grants.

Other co-authors at the cancer research unit include Snigdha Banerjee, associate professor of medicine in hematology and oncology at KU, and postdoctoral scholars Archana De and Amlan Das.

Egypt resumes hot air balloon sightseeing

LUXOR, Egypt (AP) ? Egypt resumed hot air balloon sightseeing in the ancient city of Luxor on Sunday, weeks after a fiery accident led authorities to halt the flights.

Mohammed Ibrahim Sherif, head of the civil aviation authority, said the first hot air balloon was launched in the southern city after safety measures required by his office were implemented. He said five out of seven companies have been allowed to resume the flights.

Luxor governor Ezzat Saad, who boarded the first balloon with several British, Australian and Arab tourists, said he was pleased with the resumption, and considers the sport "one of the most important touristic aspects of the city."

Authorities suspended flights after 19 tourists were killed on Feb. 26 when their balloon caught fire and crashed in a sugar cane field. One British tourist survived, along with the balloon's pilot. Both were injured.

The tourists ? from Hong Kong, Japan, Britain, Belgium and France ? were travelling on a sunrise flight over Luxor's dramatic pharaonic sites and desert landscape.

The disaster occurred as the balloon was landing. Initial investigations suggested the fire broke out when a landing cable tore a fuel tube used to fire the burner that heats the balloon's air.

Sherif said investigations were still ongoing and may take another five weeks.

Ballooning experts say the accident was the worst in the sport's 200-year history. The second-largest disaster was in 1989, when two balloons collided over the Australian outback near the town of Alice Springs, killing 13.

Luxor has seen balloon crashes in the past. In 2009, 16 tourists were injured when their balloon struck a cellphone transmission tower. A year earlier, seven tourists were injured in a similar crash. After the 2009 accident, Egypt suspended the flights for several months and tightened safety standards.

The flights provide spectacular views of the ancient Karnak and Luxor temples, starting before sunrise and passing over green fields leading to the Valley of the Kings ? the burial site of Tutankhamun and other pharaohs.

The first hot air balloon flight in Luxor took place in 1988, flown by foreign pilots and operators, said Ahmed Abboud, head of the Egyptian union for balloon flights. The first Egyptian companies were established in 1994, he added.

The accident cast a further blow to the country's ailing tourism industry, already hobbled by two years of instability following the ouster of Hosni Mubarak, who ruled the country for almost 30 years.

In 2011, the number of tourists coming to Egypt fell to 9.8 million from 14.7 million the year before, knocking revenues 30 percent to $8.8 billion. Last year, numbers rose to just over 10 million, but most tourists head for Red Sea resorts and not Nile Valley sites like Luxor.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The governor of Massachusetts says he has no idea what motivated the terrorists who exploded two bombs near the finish line of the Boston Marathon.

Speaking Sunday on CBS' "Face the Nation," Deval (deh-VAL') Patrick said it's hard to imagine why someone would deliberately harm, quote "innocent men, women and children in the way that these two fellows did."

Patrick also said law enforcers believe the immediate threat ended when the police killed one of the alleged terrorists and captured the other. The two men were brothers whose family had come to the U.S. from Russia.

Three people were killed and more than 180 injured when two bombs, apparently fashioned out of pressure cookers, exploded Monday about four hours into the race.

Israeli airline staff start strike over open skies deal

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Workers at Israel's three main airlines went on strike on Sunday, stopping their outbound flights in protest at the government's plans to ratify an open skies deal with Europe they see as a threat to their jobs.

Supporters of the open skies deal say its relaxation of restrictions and quotas on flights between Israel and European Union countries would increase competition, lower prices and boost Israel's tourism industry.

But Ofer Eini, the head of Israel's Histadrut labor union, said the agreement could leave Israel's airlines struggling to compete with their European counterparts and cost about 17,000 jobs.

"The way in which (this deal) is being implemented will on the one hand bring a reduction in airfares but it will also cause Israeli companies to collapse," he told Israel Radio.

Workers at El Al , Arkia and Israir started their open-ended strike at 5 a.m. (0200 GMT) but the carriers brought forward most departures so that outgoing passengers could leave Israel. Flights coming into Israel and foreign airlines were not affected.

Eini called on the cabinet, which was expected to ratify the agreement later on Sunday, to delay its vote by a month to allow further discussion on adapting the plan to ensure the airlines could continue to compete.

"We are asking for a delay of a month to ensure that (the airlines will not collapse), nothing will happen if we wait another month" he added.

Transport Minister Yisrael Katz said the cabinet would approve the agreement and that it could not be changed because its European signatories had already signed it. He urged the unions to call off the strike.

"The government will ratify the deal today ... the open skies agreement is the only way for El Al to economize at long last and to change its approach so that it can compete in the tough world market," he told Israel Radio.

Katz, a member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's right-wing Likud party, has said the deal contained risks as well as benefits and airlines should "exploit the opportunity to compete more vigorously with European airlines".

Love Home Swap, The Members Club For Swapping Houses, Gets Into Rentals

Love Home Swap, a U.K.-based startup that appeals to homeowners that want to trade their places, is getting into proper rentals. The company, which launched about a year and a half ago, was operating on a member subscription model. People would pay to get access to a network of homeowners that were open to swapping residences across 150 different countries, plus a travel team, personal concierge and travel guides. Now the company, which just raised $1.3 million from MMC Ventures, is offering rentals along with swaps. Swaps are, of course, free to members. With rentals, Love Home Swap will take a 12 percent service fee. If you’re a gold member, it’s 11 percent and for Platinum members, it’s 10 percent. On the hosting side, the company will take a 3 percent service fee, which drops to 2 percent for Gold members and 1 percent from Platinum members. Love Home Swap also pairs each transaction with an insurance policy from Hiscox to protect members against damages or theft. Rentals are a natural move for the company, as nearly two-thirds of members said they would be interested in rentals. It adds a different revenue model to the subscription business. Normally, Love Home Swap charges anywhere from roughly $15 a month to $42 per month to belong to its club, depending on the tier of service you want. At the top level, they get a concierge service that helps with restaurant and flight bookings. That business has helped Love Home Swap grow revenues by 37 percent and triple traffic since funding was closed in December of last year. The company just acquired 1stHomeExchange, to add 23,000 listings. Love Home Swap doesn’t really consider itself a direct competitor to San Francisco’s Airbnb. It positions itself as a service that caters to higher-end customers that are a bit older, own property and have the ability to go on holiday more often. The company points to listings like a six-bedroom house in Koh Samui, Thailand or a five-bedroom chateau in Brittany. The average age of their customer is 46 and they’re predominantly female. It’s split 50 percent between families while 21 percent are couples with no kids and 18 percent are empty nesters. The rest are independent travellers. NRA ardor, clout overwhelm gun-control groups, for now

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - As lawmakers gathered in the U.S. Senate on Wednesday to vote on a plan to expand background checks for gun buyers, staffers in the office of Alaska Democratic Senator Mark Begich fielded a steady stream of calls urging him to break with his party and vote against the measure.

Those callers got what they wanted: Begich voted no - one of four Democrats from gun-friendly states to do so - and the most ambitious gun-control push in two decades went down to defeat.

It was an impressive show of force by the National Rifle Association, which reaffirmed its reputation as one of Washington's most powerful interest groups by turning back one of President Barack Obama's top second-term priorities.

The NRA mobilized a disciplined, grassroots army that flooded Republican and conservative Democratic lawmakers' offices with phone calls and e-mails.

The NRA and its supporters also followed a tightly woven script that accused Obama of not following up on thousands of gun buyers each year who fail background checks under existing laws. The association's talking points, often repeated word for word by lawmakers and NRA supporters, cast the new background checks plan as an infringement on the constitutional right to bear arms of law-abiding citizens.

After the measure fell six votes short of the 60 votes it needed to advance in the 100-member Senate, Obama acknowledged that gun-control supporters have a way to go before they can match the sustained passion that has allowed the gun lobby to steadily loosen firearms laws over the past 18 years.

Now, with the push for gun control in a holding pattern on Capitol Hill, gun-control groups are vowing to meet Obama's challenge to beat the NRA at its own game.

Gun control has a deep-pocketed sponsor in New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who spent $12 million on ads in March targeting key lawmakers.

Organizing for America, an advocacy group spawned from Obama's re-election campaign, plans to mount rallies to pressure lawmakers who voted against the bill.

Separately, the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, an independent liberal group, plans to run newspaper ads criticizing Montana Democratic Senator Max Baucus for voting against the bill, the first of what the group says could be many targeted pressure campaigns aimed at lawmakers who will face re-election next year.

That effort could backfire, analysts say.

The Democratic Party - which controls 55 seats in the Senate - needs conservative Democrats such as Begich and Baucus to win re-election next year in order to retain control of the chamber. Efforts to punish them for their vote could hand those seats to Republicans.

Going after Begich or Baucus would "blow up in their face," said Jim Manley, a former spokesman for Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid. "They have to decide whether they want an issue or whether they want to win."

INTENSITY TRUMPS POPULARITY

As Wednesday's vote showed, the NRA can count on their 4.5 million members to leap into action when it counts. Gun-control groups have yet to match that type of enduring intensity.

"People who own guns care about guns," said Richard Feldman, a former NRA lobbyist who now heads a gun-rights group called Independent Firearm Owners of America that supported the background-check legislation.

"People who don't own guns, they have the same vote but they don't care about guns," he said.

Wednesday's vote was the NRA's toughest test in nearly 20 years.

The December massacre of 20 school children and six adults in Newtown, Connecticut, pushed gun control to the top of Obama's agenda and galvanized advocates such as Bloomberg.

The NRA also was coming off an election that called its influence into question. Only 5 percent of the $19 million the group spent on television ads and other forms of electoral communication in 2012 went toward winning candidates, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, which tracks political spending.

Demographic trends are working against the NRA as well. Fewer than one-third of U.S. households owned guns in 2011, down from 54 percent in 1977, according to the University of Chicago's General Social Survey.

The NRA's stance against expanding background checks to people who buy guns over the Internet and at gun shows, reversing its earlier support, put the NRA at odds with 80 percent to 90 percent of the public.

But as Wednesday's vote showed, a motivated minority that cares passionately about an issue often carries more weight in Washington than a majority that is not quite as focused on that single issue.

"It's intensity versus preference," said anti-tax activist Grover Norquist, a member of the NRA's board of directors. "While 90 percent will tell you, 'Sure, I'm for that,' 5 percent will really hate that, and on Election Day the only people who remember your position are the 5" percent, he said.

Gun-control advocates could make headway in the coming months by making enough noise at the grassroots level to let lawmakers such as Baucus and Begich know that they would not pay a significant price if they changed their minds, said Matt Bennett, a co-founder of the centrist Democratic think tank Third Way.

That could allow the bill to come back up for another vote before the 2014 elections, he said.

"Showing a bit of anger is useful," Bennett said.

Perhaps, but after this week's vote, Baucus, for one, made clear that he believed that rural Montana voters would punish him if he supported a measure seen as limiting gun owners' rights.

Gun-control groups will have to match an NRA political machine that maintains a vigorous presence at all levels of government. In February alone, the group donated to three state legislature candidates in Rhode Island and 16 congressional candidates and campaign groups, according to federal records.

Despite the NRA's setbacks in last year's elections, the gun lobby's tactics and legislative success remain an imposing force, said Sheila Krumholz, executive director of the Center for Responsive Politics.

Gun-rights groups have donated $596,000 to the sitting members of the Senate since 2007, while gun-control groups have donated only $5,000.

The NRA and other gun-rights groups "are perennially among the most powerful interest groups in Washington," Krumholz said.

Now Polian is playing a different role, analyzing the draft for ESPN, and he was asked to pick the best quarterback in this year?s draft. Polian?s surprising answer? Oklahoma?s Landry Jones.

Polian said he attended the 2011 Oklahoma-Texas A&M game and watched Jones complete 18/38 passes for 255 yards, with two touchdowns and no interceptions, and Polian thought Jones compared favorably to Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who was last year?s No. 8 overall pick and is now the Dolphins? starter.

?He was a good one, and when he had a good supporting cast around him, he was great,? Polian said of Jones. ?I was at the game in Norman where he beat Tannehill head-to-head, in a very, very fierce wind. So this guy has been a winner, he?s got stature, he?s got arm strength ? he can make all the throws. He sees the field quite well, and he?s a natural leader.?

Polian acknowledged that there are concerns about Jones, including his lack of mobility, and he said he doesn?t see a Peyton Manning in this year?s draft. But he thinks if there?s a quarterback who?s going to make an instant impact for an NFL team in 2013, it?s Jones.

?I don?t think anybody in this group is going to be able to step in right away and lead the team, but if you ask me, who?s the guy who?s most ready, and who?s the guy who?s had the most winning experience, it would be Landry Jones,? Polian said.

From all indications, Polian?s view is a minority opinion ? most people think Geno Smith of West Virginia, E.J. Manuel of Florida State, Matt Barkley of USC and Ryan Nassib of Syracuse are all better prospects than Jones.

Cell-permeable peptide shows promise for controlling cardiovascular disease

Atherosclerosis ? sometimes called "hardening of the arteries" ? is a leading cause of death and morbidity in Western countries. A cell-permeable peptide containing the NF-?B nuclear localization sequence (NLS) shows promise as a potential agent in controlling the development of atherosclerotic disease. This study is published in the May 2013 issue of The American Journal of Pathology.

Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the arterial and vascular wall. The objective of many therapeutic compounds is to modulate atherogenesis ? the process that leads to the formation of fatty tissue-containing plaques that stick to the cell wall. Numerous cellular and molecular inflammatory components are involved in the disease process, and uncontrolled activation of pro-inflammatory transcription factors, such as nuclear factor-B (NF-?B), plays a significant role. Several NF-?B inhibitors are in phase II-III clinical trials against various inflammatory diseases, but most cardiovascular research is still in the preliminary laboratory experimental phase.

Investigators in Spain, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany studied the anti-inflammatory and atheroprotective effects of a cell-permeable peptide containing the NF-?B NLS. In vitro tests clearly established that NLS peptide blocks the nuclear import of activated NF-?B and inhibits NF-?B activation in vascular cells. These findings were corroborated in vivo in ApoE knockout mice, an experimental model relevant to human atherosclerosis. In these experiments, the mice were fed a high-fat diet and treated with either NLS peptide or vehicle (control group).

The results showed that systemic administration of NLS peptide reduced the nuclear NF-?B activity in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) and macrophages of aortic plaques of mice. More importantly, NLS peptide inhibited lesion development in mice either at the onset of atherosclerosis (early treatment) or after the development of advanced plaques (delayed treatment), without affecting serum cholesterol levels. The results also demonstrated that NLS peptide alters plaque composition and inflammation in atherosclerotic lesions.

"The NF-?B system is a crucial factor regulating the expression of genes in different steps of the atherosclerotic process, from early phases characterized by lipid modification, chemotaxis, adhesion of leukocytes, monocyte differentiation, foam cell formation, and inflammatory cytokine expression to more advanced lesions involving cell death, migration and proliferation of VSMCs, and fibrous cap formation," explained lead investigator Carmen Gomez-Guerrero, PhD, of the Renal and Vascular Inflammation Laboratory, IIS-Fundaci?n Jim?nez D?az, Autonoma University, Madrid, Spain.

"Our study demonstrates that targeting NF-?B nuclear translocation hampers inflammation and atherosclerosis development and identifies cell-permeable NLS peptide as a potential anti-atherosclerotic agent," she said. "These properties make cell-permeable NLS peptide a promising prevention/intervention strategy to inhibit inflammation in cardiovascular diseases."
