CINCINNATI ? Coming off an impressive win on Raw, Intercontinental Champion Wade Barrett faced former U.S. Champion R-Truth in the featured contest on WWE Main Event. Also, tag team action highlighted the evening with a competitive contest pitting Layla & Natalya against Aksana & Alicia Fox, followed by The Usos taking on The Prime Time Players.

Two nights after narrowly defeating The Miz and Chris Jericho in an action-packed Triple Threat Match to retain the Intercontinental Championship, Wade Barrett shifted his focus to former U.S. Champion R-Truth. With The Miz at ringside calling the action, Barrett intended to send a message to The Awesome One ? and all challengers ? while continuing to build on the momentum of his Raw title defense.

Since returning from injury, R-Truth has been building his own head of steam and derailing the Intercontinental Champion would certainly propel the rapping Superstar back into title contention. An experienced in-ring veteran, R-Truth was well aware that the only way to match up with the aggressive style of The Barrett Barrage was to channel the same vigor as his opponent. Relying on his quickness and agility, Truth?s unorthodox style left the Intercontinental Champion reeling early in the contest.

The resilience of The Bare-Knuckle Brawler was on display, withstanding the effective offense of R-Truth before turning the tide outside the ring. Once in control of the contest, Barrett made sure to capitalize on his brand of competitiveness, attacking his opponent with unbridled ferocity. R-Truth remained in the battle, however, regaining control by using his prowess to counter a number of the British brawler?s high-impact maneuvers.

The Intercontinental Champion nearly met defeat when his opponent countered his trademark Wasteland maneuver. Trying to regroup, Barrett rolled out of the ring as R-Truth reached for him through the ropes. In a devilishly wise move, Barrett pulled on Truth?s arm ? forcing his challenger to bounce off the ropes and to the canvas. Seizing the opportunity, the British Superstar rolled down his elbow pad, re-entered the ring and delivered a devastating Bull Hammer elbow to secure the victory.

Following his impressive victory, the Intercontinental Champion made sure to take a moment to gloat about the win and the effectiveness of The Barrett Barrage. As he addressed the WWE Universe, Barrett made sure to specifically target his opponent from Raw, The Miz. Shoving The Awesome One, the star of ?The Marine 3: Homefront? exploded from his chair and attacked the Intercontinental Champion, sending him away from the ring.

Sheamus re-enforced his uncertainty about the possibility of teaming with Big Show against The Shield at WrestleMania. (SEE THE CELTIC WARRIOR'S INTERVIEW)

White House gives Congress 90-day notice on EU trade talks

By Doug Palmer

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House on Wednesday formally notified Congress of its plans to begin free trade talks with the 27-nation European Union, an effort to leverage the world's largest trade and investment relationship to create new economic growth.

"A high-standard comprehensive trade agreement with Europe is something that will be enormously beneficial for the U.S. economy and the EU in terms of creating new export opportunities (and) boosting jobs," Acting U.S. Trade Representative Demetrios Marantis told reporters at the U.S. Foreign Press Center.

President Barack Obama announced plans to negotiate the pact in his speech to Congress in February. But U.S. practice is for the administration to send lawmakers a formal notification at least 90 days before beginning talks.

Lawmakers and business groups welcomed the news, but said it heightened the need for the administration and Congress to work to together to pass "trade promotion authority."

That legislation would allow the White House to submit the U.S.-EU trade deal - once it is completed in one or two years - to Congress for an up-or-down vote without any amendment.

However, the trade promotion authority bill also gives Congress a chance to craft negotiating objectives for the U.S.-EU talks and another set of U.S. free trade talks with 10 countries in the Asia-Pacific region slated for conclusion this year.

"To fully realize the potential benefits of a transatlantic agreement, we will have to tackle many difficult behind-the-border measures," House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp, a Michigan Republican, said.

Because tariffs across the Atlantic are relatively low, the hard work of the negotiations will be smoothing out regulatory differences that have stunted trade in areas such as agriculture, chemicals, pharmaceutical and autos.

NOT 'A MAGIC POTION'

Two-way goods and services trade between the United States and the EU totals about $1 trillion annually. The two sides also have combined foreign direct investment in each other's market of about $3.7 trillion.

But bilateral trade between the two large, mature economies has grown slowly in recent years because of the effects of 2008-2009 financial crisis and competing subsidy and regulatory policies, the Peterson Institute for International Economics noted in a recent policy brief.

"A trade accord is not a magic potion for prosperity, but it can contribute to economic recovery by removing even relatively low barriers across a large volume of bilateral trade," the Washington-based think tank said.

The Center for Economic Policy Research in London has estimated a U.S.-EU free trade agreement could generate 119 billion euros ($155 billion) a year for the European Union and 95 billion euros a year for the United States.

At a Senate Finance Committee hearing on Tuesday, lawmakers repeatedly pressed Marantis on the need for a "comprehensive" pact that would tear down longstanding EU barriers to U.S. farm products and contain strong intellectual property rights protections for U.S. goods.

"Our past negotiations with the European Union have shown just how difficult this task can be. Let's hope that we can get it done this time," Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah, the top Republican on the Finance Committee, said.

Marantis acknowledged those difficulties in the letter notifying Congress of the talks, but said the potential gains from the pact "overwhelmingly justify the effort."

Exploratory discussions with the EU and key stakeholders "boost our confidence that it will be possible to find mutually acceptable solutions on difficult issues," he said.

BlackBerry 10 'not secure enough' for UK government workers

BlackBerry 10 'not secure enough' for UK government workers

Hitting one of Blackberry's key markets in the British Isles, its new smartphone platform (and the Balance software that divides work and personal profiles on the Z10) hasn't passed the security rigors of the UK's Communications Electronics Security Group. According to The Guardian, handset contracts with the government and NHS total in the tens of thousands, while the older BB 7.1 passed the 'restricted' security level -- two levels below the presumably agent-friendly 'secret' level -- at the end of last year. The Canadian phone maker said in a statement that changes in the approval process had affected the time it's had to jump through the necessary security hoops, adding that BB10 has already passed similar US and German tests with flying colors. Blackberry added that it is "continuing to work closely with CESG on the approval of BlackBerry 10." Maybe hiring Adele for that creative director position would have made a difference, or not.

The Way of Improvement Leads Home: "Let the Teachers Teach"

David Patten, an award-winning history teacher and writer, has a solution to the problems facing public school education in America. This is yet another sad story about the way testing is destroying the teaching of history.? An approach to teaching history that relies entirely on the current form of standardized testing will not be effective in teaching historical thinking skills.? Here is a taste of Patten's piece at History News Network:

From the moment I was hired to teach history and government at a public high school to the moment, years later, when I walked away, I had the audacity to believe that I had been hired for my expertise. I taught the entire range of students, seventh through twelfth grades. No matter what the age or ability level, I actually believed that I had something to convey to my students and that I could truly refine thought and inspire learning. And why not? I graduated summa cum laude with a 4.0 GPA in two majors. I was already a published writer and had traveled extensively. Given those brazen assumptions, to me the textbook was a mere afterthought, something to reference every now and then. State and district curriculums were only skeletons and I would flesh them out. My students would learn through highly detailed learning packets hundreds of pages of learning packets that I wrote. I also created slide shows and later on PowerPoints which dovetailed the information contained in the packets. These tools formed the basis of class discussions, thus touching all the learning styles. The students read the packets, learned visually, and learned orally. It did not stop there. Projects that I created became a hallmark for many of my classes. My students would write historical fiction stories along with modern and historical position papers. They would participate in ?great debates?, their own teaching project, an historical magazine project, and a world geographic magazine project. Last, there were the required reading books.? Books such as Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, Son of the Morning Star, The Prince, and Treblinka were read and thoroughly analyzed through lengthy class discussions...

It came upon us slowly at first, as most evil does. States such as Florida and Texas had been applying the new methodology for a few years. Ohio, my state, would soon follow. We heard rumors, had a few discussions concerning what it all meant, and merely wondered what impact if any the testing would have. We soon found out just how serious it all really was.? We endured district-wide meetings where administrators admonished us as to the critical importance of these fifty-question tests. Everything was going to ride upon student success or failure on these exams. Results were going to be published, levies would fail, and jobs would be lost unless we scored well. The meaning was truly driven home when a normally reticent assistant superintendent began jumping up and down on the stage while screaming into a microphone, ?Ram it down their throats!? She later apologized for the outburst, but the message was clear; testing would direct the curriculum, dictate the programs, and determine the future of our students and school district.
