Six Metra trains were canceled Monday morning due to an engineer shortage.
Two inbound trains and four outbound trains on the Union Pacific West Line were canceled due to the manpower shortage, according to the Metra website. The first train affected was scheduled to depart the Elburn station at 4:48 a.m.
?It?s just a shortage of engineers and extra engineers,? Union Pacific Media Relations Dir. Mark Davis said. ?It?s kind of like a combination of reasons. You have vacations, employees in training, family leave, a few employees are ill -- but by no means is this a labor incident or dispute of any kind.?
About 13 engineers did not show up for work, while about six included in the shortage were on the on-call backup list, Davis said.
It was unclear if the Union Pacific was aware of any scheduling problems ahead of time, according to Davis, who said the company is working with its crew management team to staff trains scheduled to depart later Monday.
?Our operating management in Chicago is working with our crew management group to see if they can find engineers that are qualified for this afternoon,? Davis said.
Davis said management will discuss what happened to ensure it will not happen again in the future.
?We know that the West Line customers rely on us to operate trains on time and we apologize for this inconvenience today,? Davis said. ?Our management team will get to the bottom of this and see that it doesn?t happen again.?
As of about 8 a.m., 14 of the 20 Union Pacific West Line trains made it to their scheduled destinations, according to Metra spokesman Tom Miller. The line runs between Elburn and the Ogilvie Transportation Center in Chicago.
