How To Protect Your Pet From Fleas - Review - HotReviews

How To Protect Your Pet From FleasI have been a dog owner for the last 25 years and take my dog everywhere. To restaurants, motels, church, yes even in my bed. Fleas are not very picky and dont care if it?s animal blood or your blood. So fleas have been my sworn enemy for the last 25 years. What I learned by going through your e-book (How To Protect Your Pets From Fleas), made me wish something like your book was around a long time ago? I know times are hard, but the fleas dont care. By starting before fleas get a hold, it is easily possible to save the price of the book by using the cheap, or home remedies found in it. I am passive person, but DEATH to FLEAS! I highly recommend your book! Suzanne Gorrell, Disabilityjourney.com

Over the years my pets and I have just tolerated our flea problem. I never let it get out of hand, but I never got rid of all the fleas either? Then I got a copy of your book ? many thanks ? and learned that there were more ways to deal with fleas than I knew about. And more importantly, as I was reading I began to think about getting rid of my flea problem in an coordinated way. Not just treating my dogs and cats haphazardly, but actually attacking the problem, in a systimatic way ? taking care of the fleas not just on my pets, but in my entire home?. I came up with a plan that used several ways of getting rid of fleas mentioned in your book and now I don?t tolerate fleas, cause there aren?t any fleas in my home to tolerate? Samual Frea

The leading cause of skin problems in dogs and cats is the ordinary flea. Fleas can occur year-round in warm climates or on pets that live indoors." ? Minnisota Department of Health

"The sticktight flea is one of the smallest fleas found on domestic animals, usually measuring less than half the size of the cat flea. And it is not as common as the cat flea"

"Fleas are blood-feeding insects. Pain and itching results from an allergic reaction to the materials that the fleas inject into the skin at the time of the bite."

If you?re looking for ways to get rid of fleas and keep them from coming back? Then this book is for you! If you?ve heard conflicting advice about the best way to treat your flea-infested pet and want clear answers? Then this book is for you! Or maybe you?re just curious about what fleas are and why they find our pets so attractive? Then this book is for you, too!"

I first encountered fleas when I was kid with my own dog? he slept in my room at night and waited for me to come home from school each day.

His name was ?Sparky?, and he was just a mutt. But I taught him to do tricks like shaking hands, sitting and barking on command? we played ball and he caught frisbees. I loved that dog. He was my pal.

Sparky was a ?flea factory?! He was always scratching and scratching and biting himself?

I tried everything: flea collars, many baths, various home remedies. Even talked my mom into taking him to vet a few times (I hated seeing him suffer). But nothing seemed to work very long. Oh, some of the treatments did work for a few days? and then the fleas would be back, just as bad as before!

I thought to myself, then? shouldn?t I be able to effectively get rid of Sparky?s fleas and keep them from coming back? But I was just a kid?

Ok, I?m not really a flea expert? but that?s what all my friends and family think, today.

Until just a couple of years ago, I thought I had my current dog?s flea problem, pretty much in hand. As an adult, I was better in my efforts in controlling fleas in my home or I thought was? Then we had a foreign exchange student stay with us, who had a bad allergic reaction to flea bites from fleas living in my home!

I wasn?t better at stopping those fleas. I was just better at ignoring the problem&hellip And that is when I got obsessed with finding out everything I could about fleas, the diseases and ailments they cause, why our pets get them?

Any information that claimed to be useful for preventing or removing fleas? I wanted to know about! I devoured every website on the internet about fleas (a good place to start). I got some magazines, some books, and read all the research articles on what actually works and what doesn?t.

Some flea treatments work EXTREMELY well for getting fleas to find another home? And others don?t work as well.

As I was researching and began to know what to look for? I began to notice specific things that could tip you off to a treatment that works? and what you should look out for that would tell you it?s a total scam.

And I realized that you didn?t need to know a lot of stuff. You don?t have to be a ?flea expert? like me or a veterinarian.

In fact, what I discovered was there are only a few, but important things you have to know about fleas to make smart buying choices for products and what strategies to coordinate with them.

I discovered a problem as I was searching for good flea imformation? There was no good, simple guide to flea treatment and prevention. I could not find anything ? that booklet ? that put all the necessary information together and left out the fluff and the unnecessary data.

What I was looking for, and what you will find here, was just something that told me what I needed to know about flea treatments and which ones actually work? What are the basic things I should know? Read?more?

U.S. Has Binged, It's Time to Pay the Tab

SAY this about all the bickering over the federal debt ceiling: at least people are talking openly about our nation?s growing debt load. This $14.3 trillion issue is front and center ? exactly where it should be.

Into the fray comes?a thoughtful new paper by Joseph E. Gagnon, a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, which studies economic policy. Written with Marc Hinterschweiger, a research analyst there, the report states plainly: ?That government debt will grow to dangerous and unsustainable levels in most advanced and many emerging economies over the next 25 years ? if there are no changes in current tax rates or government benefit programs in retirement and health care ? is virtually beyond...

Facebook Still Has No iPad App But They?re Building A Desktop Software Team?!

Facebook has no iPad app. It's ridiculous. Their iPhone app is the most downloaded app in the history of apps. And third-party iPad apps (many of which aim to trick users) constantly dominate the top 10 lists for both free and paid apps. And yet, Facebook doesn't seem to care at all about the device. Because they're all about HTML5, right? Well, someone might want to tell the Seattle office that. On the jobs page for the relatively new Seattle Facebook office, one of the openings is for "Software Engineer, Desktop Software". Desktop software. Desktop. Before the damn iPad. Hey Facebook, 1986 called, they want their strategic vision back.

Women who try to quit smoking less likely - Health, medical, and ...

Where you live, how old you are and whether you?re male or female all affect your chances of giving up smoking. These are the findings of a study which suggests that while NHS stop smoking services are effective in supporting some smokers to quit there are significant differences in the longer term success rates for specific groups who are trying to give up smoking.

The study, commissioned by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) and undertaken by the UK Centre for Tobacco Control Studies (UKCTCS), reviewed published studies from between 1990 and 2007 to establish success rates for the NHS smoking cessation services. It found that older smokers are more likely than young smokers to successfully quit, some men appear to be more successful at quitting than women despite the fact that more women attend the smoking cessation services, and more disadvantaged groups face greater challenges when giving up smoking.

The findings support other international research that also suggests that while women are highly motivated to quit smoking, men may be more likely to succeed when they access services to help them stop. Several factors seem to explain the lower success rates of women, such as less confidence in quitting, the inter-relationship between gender and deprivation and differences in the meaning and role of tobacco in men and women?s lives.

Pregnant women and more disadvantaged groups face particular challenges in quitting. Pregnant smokers who enrol in smoking cessation programmes may just suspend their smoking for the duration of their pregnancy as opposed to quitting altogether. These smokers are more likely to be shift and manual workers and may experience multiple barriers that make it harder to stop smoking in the long-term.

There are similar difficulties for smokers from more deprived areas where smoking is more prevalent. In such areas, smoking is often perceived as the norm which makes quitting harder.

While cessation rates for smokers accessing NHS stop smoking services were lower in disadvantaged areas (52.6 per cent) than elsewhere (57.9 per cent) the proportion of smokers being treated by the services was higher (16.7 per cent compared with 13.4 per cent). The net effect with the additional treatment meant that a higher proportion of smokers in the most disadvantaged areas reported success (8.8 per cent) than in more advantaged areas (7.8 per cent).

The UK remains the only country in the world to have a comprehensive, free-at-the-point-of-use cessation services and the study suggests that these services do provide effective support for smokers who want to quit. However, a number of important research questions remain regarding the effectiveness of different forms of intervention offered by the services.

For example, because gender, ethnicity, class, age and level of dependency affect success in giving up smoking, tailored interventions may help to improve cessation rates. In the case of pregnant women, two reviews of NHS smoking cessation services provide evidence that the most effective treatment for pregnant smokers includes elements such as systematic training of midwives in how to refer pregnant smokers, flexible home visits, and providing intensive multi-session treatments delivered by a small number of dedicated staff.

The research team concluded that NHS stop smoking services have made a contribution to reducing inequalities in smoking prevalence. To achieve government targets will require both the development of more innovative cessation interventions for some specific groups of smokers and recognition that tobacco control policy will need to take account of the unique challenges these groups face when trying to quit smoking.

Owners Direct in Benalmadena

By: Porsche Klinger
Posted: Apr 20, 2011

OWNERS DIRECT their clients to the best places when on holiday. They should know the best places to go. A holiday in Benalmadena? Well this is just a thought: one person?s prospective of a possible holiday that so many could so easily choose to do. The fact that the destination is Benalmadena but you can probably do something extremely similar in a town near you, wherever you are in Spain.

First day out and its early morning, down on the sea front is a local walk known locally as El Paseo. It?s a flat and easy seafront walk which stretches all along the coast from Benalmadena marina all the way through to Torremolinos, not far from the airport. Three miles of paved surface ideal for cycling jogging or even roller skating if preferred. There are plenty of opportunities to eat breakfast along the course. If you?re doing the El Paseo as an exercise regime then you would be pleased to know there are many spots with equipment to work out on. If the kids are with you they too can find their own separate play areas, along with the restaurants that line the El Paseo there are a few shops.

Once back from the 3 mile walk, run or jog then it?s time to do something different. Don?t worry about catching that tan you always look out for when on holiday: lying on the beach is not going to get it for you any quicker, If you enjoy the early morning walk and wish to continue with the exercise theme then the skating rink that opened in 2007 is an alternative. Actually it?s probably best to do this at the height of the day when the sun at its hottest as it is going to roast you alive. Being out of the sun and in the cooling arena of an ice rink could be just what the doctor ordered. There?s not only the ice rink at Arroya de la Miel: Benalmadena has a gym and indoor swimming pool and occasional disco nights.

Multiply choices for the afternoon entertainments, depending if this is a family outing or a couple wanting to experience life. Tivoli World is the entertainment centre of Benalmadena and a fantastic day out for all the family. It is a unique spot on the Costa del Sol: a world full of magic and every year new and exciting rides are being constantly added. Lunch time could be spent in any number of the many restaurants serving different gastronomic delights in the theme bars, all in an entertaining afternoon.

Alternatively, how about a couple of hours flying like a bird with perfectly safe take off and landings from the back of a parasailing power boat, taking you up 200 metres above the sea? It?s a fantastic way to view the coast of the Costa del Sol. There?s no age restrictions and safe for the whole family so make it a social occasion with up to six people in the air at a time. It?s also perfect for hen or stag parties even or team building if the vacation is a staff holiday.

Finally round the day off perfectly by arranging a drive. Getting picked up is inclusive in the price and then taken out to a secret destination with fantastic views as you drive through the rolling hills behind Benalmadena. Arrive at the ?Cortijo? with a mini bull ring where for the duration of the evening you?ll be wined and dined with fantastic Paella and plenty of beverages to keep you well oiled. This is followed by two brilliant flamenco shows that take place in the bull ring. It?s an authentic piece of Andalucia ready to take home as one of those unforgettable experiences when on an OWNERS DIRECT holiday.

Google pinpoints shutdown dates for Wave, Translate APIs (amongst others)

'Tis a sad day in the world of Google... at least for developers who use any of a handful of ill-fated APIs. As the search giant's API list has grown in recent months, it's making the decision to cull a few in the effort of "spring cleaning." In fact, a grand total of seven new APIs were launched during Google I/O alone, but it looks as if the end is nigh for the Blog Search API, Books Data API, Image Search API, News Search API, Patent Search API, Safe Browsing API (v1 only), Translate API, Transliterate API, Video Search API and Virtual Keyboard API. Of those, Wave is most unsurprising, but Translate likely hurts the most -- particularly for jetsetters who relied on those baked-in services to wrap their heads around various tongues. According to Goog, the Translate API has been officially deprecated "due to the substantial economic burden caused by extensive abuse." A pretty ominous phrase, to be sure, and further proof that a few rotten apples can ruin things for the whole of us. Hit the links below to get a glimpse of the full damage -- we're warning you, it ain't pretty.

An Experienced Vet is Worth the Search | Stop at Speechlesstime

Saturday, May 28th, 2011 | Health Tips

Establishing a good working relationship with a veterinarian can be a challenge for any pet owner, but is a special challenge for the exotic pet owner. The exotic pet owner must find a vet who is willing to see their pet, knows something about their pet, and has the facilities, equipment and materials to treat their pet.

An interest in exotics doesn?t necessarily equal proficiency in treating them. I say this from experience, as although I am fascinated with exotic pets, I have no special training in treating them medically. When I was practicing as a veterinarian, except for very routine care, I generally referred exotics to a specialist nearby. Thing may have changed a bit since I went to school, but during my training, exposure to exotics was still very imited even though I sought out extra exposure to exotic pets in my choice of clinical rotations. If at all possible, try to locate a vet who specializes in exotics and has taken specialized training (e.g. a residency in exotic animal medicine, or one who is board certified in an exotics specialty).

Such specialists can be hard to come by, so the next best is someone who has lots of experience treating exotic pets. Ask a potential veterinarian about their training, credentials, and memberships in specialty organizations such as the Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV) or the Association of Reptile and Amphibian Veterinarians (ARAV). At the very least, choose a veterinarian with a real interest in exotic species and who is willing to learn about them and who will consult with a specialist when needed.

Personal recommendation or word of mouth is probably the most efficient way of finding a veterinarian. Friends, breeders, or organizations (e.g. the local herpetological society, other clubs) are good starting points. Other places to locate veterinarians include the yellow pages/phone directories (look for clinics that specifically advertise that they treat exotics), the state/provincial veterinary association directory, or even web pages that have veterinary directories (including the AAV and ARAV sites mentioned above). Several species specific web pages have sections where readers can submit contact information for veterinarians they have used.

Most importantly, do not wait until an emergency to find a vet. If your pet should get sick, a veterinarian with whom you feel comfortable and who is comfortable dealing with your pet will make the situation less stressful. An initial check up is well advised for any new pet and this is a good chance to see how a veterinarian handles your pet and how comfortable they are with your pet, and also to see if you and the veterinarian make a good match ? sometimes there is a personality clash and you won?t develop a good rapport with a certain veterinarian.

A veterinarian familiar with exotics will spend a good deal of time discussing the care and husbandry of a particular pet, as many problems with exotic pets are related to improper diet or husbandry. The veterinarian should also appear confident handling your pet.

There are several criteria which can be used to evaluate a practice in general and the following web pages discuss these in detail:

- How to Find a Veterinarian ? advice from About?s Guide to Veterinary Medicine on finding and evaluating a vet, with a link to some online vet finder directories.

- How to Find an Avian Veterinarian ? helpful tips for finding a veterinarian- geared toward bird owners but also applicable to any exotic species.

For exotics there are more specific considerations, including:

- special training or continuing education related to exotic pet medicine

- how often exotic species are seen in their practice

- special facilities or equipment to handle exotic pets

- experience (personal or professional) and familiarity with the husbandry and medicine of a particular species

Finding the right vet can be a challenge and may not seem that important when your pet is healthy, but the effort will be well worth it if your pet should fall ill!

Mladic To Be Sent To The Hague For Trial

The man most wanted by the U.N. war crimes tribunal, a fugitive on the run for 16 years, Ratko Mladic has been arrested. Serbian president Boris Tadic announced the Serbian Intelligence Agency had found Mladic in the north of the country. There, he's said to have assumed another identity. Now, Mladic will be sent to The Hague in the Netherlands to await trial.

ROBERT SIEGEL, host:

From NPR News, this is ALL THINGS CONSIDERED. I'm Robert Siegel.

MICHELE NORRIS, host:

And I'm Michele Norris.

Today, in Serbia, the man most-wanted by U.N. war crimes tribunal, a fugitive for 16 years, was escorted into a courtroom in Belgrade. Ratko Mladic was arrested early this morning.

SIEGEL: During the war that tore apart the former Yugoslavia, Mladic ran the Bosnian-Serb army. He was indicted for genocide by the U.N. tribunal in 1995 for the single-worst atrocity in Europe since World War II. Eight thousand Bosnian Muslims were massacred in Srebrenica. Mladic also faces war crimes charges for his conduct throughout the conflict.

NORRIS: Today, Serbian president Boris Tadic announced the arrest. He said the Serbian Intelligence Agency had found Mladic in a village in northern Serbia. The former general had assumed another identity. Tadic said he will be extradited to the Hague to await trial.

President BORIS TADIC (Serbia): Today, we close one chapter of our recent history that will bring us one step closer to full reconciliation in the region. I believe that every other country must be responsible for closing their own chapters. All crimes have to be fully investigated and all war criminals must face justice.

SIEGEL: President Obama, who's in France today, issued a statement there applauding the Serbian government. He finished with this: may the families of Mladic's victims find some solace in today's arrest and may this deepen the ties among the people of the region.

NORRIS: Joining us now is NPR's Tom Gjelten. He covered the war in Bosnia from start to finish and he wrote a book about the conflict. Tom, we are so glad you're with us.

TOM GJELTEN: Good to be with you, Michele.

NORRIS: Now, Mladic is most famous for presiding over the slaughter at Srebrenica. Remind us what happened there and what his role was.

GJELTEN: Michele, Srebrenica was a Muslim enclave in eastern Bosnia. It was entirely surrounded by territory that was held by the Bosnian Serbs and was besieged for years, designated by the United Nations as a safe area and, more or less, guarded by Dutch peacekeepers. And then, in July of 1995, at the direction of General Mladic, the Serbs moved into Srebrenica, took it over with almost no resistance from the U.N. peacekeepers there.

The Muslim population took shelter at the peacekeepers' base. General Mladic, who presided over this operation, personally assured the U.N. officers the people there would safe. But then, he ordered the men and boys taken away in buses and, according to witnesses and forensic evidence, he had them systematically shot. About 8,000 Muslim men and boys lined up with their hands tied behind their back and executed. They were then dumped in mass graves.

NORRIS: Can you give us a sense of what the man behind that was like personally?

GJELTEN: Well, Mladic was a very capable military leader, very intelligent. He was in charge of all the military operations carried out by the Bosnian Serbs throughout the war. He was actually a general in the federal Yugoslav army at the beginning of the war. He was commanding that portion of the Yugoslav army that was in Bosnia. And then, when Bosnia seceded from Yugoslavia, that portion of the Yugoslav army just transformed itself into the Bosnian Serb army and Mladic was the commanding general.

A very professional soldier and he knew how to relate to other military men on this kind of soldier-to-soldier basis. And in that sense, Michele, he was distinguished, I think, from some of the Muslim and other Serb officers who were much more amateurs. And a lot of the U.S. and European generals who came to Bosnia and met Mladic were impressed by his professionalism.

You know, there was actually a famous meeting between him and U.S. General Wesley Clark, who later went on to become the NATO commander, where General Mladic exchanged hats with him. And that moment was capture in a photograph that later embarrassed General Clark. But he was able to project this professional military demeanor that served him very well in that conflict.

NORRIS: He was especially popular, as I understand, with many Serbs. Why was he so popular with them?

GJELTEN: Well, one of the things about the Serb passions that drove their aggression against Bosnian Muslims was their deep sense of historical grievance - absurdly deep, it could even be said. For many Serb nationalists, the Bosnian Muslims had it coming to them because of what their ancestors had done to Serbs 200 or more years earlier during the period of Turkish rule. And Ratko Mladic was especially adept at linking the war to those Serb struggles of the past. He called the Bosnian Muslims Turks.

And I remember that when his troops captured Srebrenica, for example, Mladic actually referred back to a slaughter of Serb peasants in that area in 1804. And he said, I remember this, the time has finally come to take revenge on the Turks in this region. You know, it may sound crazy holding the Muslims responsible for something that happened 200 years earlier, but it was that linkage that he was able to make that made Mladic a hero to Serb nationalists.

NORRIS: Did the popularity with the Serbs account for him being able to escape arrest for so long?

GJELTEN: It did in a couple of ways, Michele. First of all, any Serbian government that had moved against Mladic would have faced some kind of popular backlash because he was so popular. And then, within the Serbian army, because of his long experience there, he had many, many close friends and protectors, made it very difficult for both political and security reasons to move against him for many years.

NORRIS: Any indication what led to his arrest after all these years?

GJELTEN: Well, as the years went by, the circle of people that were determined to protect him got smaller and smaller. His political counterpart, Radovan Karadzic, was arrested three years ago. And meanwhile, the political argument for arresting him became more and more compelling. The Serbian government is anxious to join the European Union.

It's been very clear from the beginning that the primary condition would be to move against Mladic and that is what, I think, finally led to this political decision. It's not like Osama bin Laden here. This arrest is not the culmination of some great investigation. This was a political decision by the Serbian government finally to go after him.

NORRIS: That's NPR's Tom Gjelten. He covered the war on Bosnia.

'Wolverine' Targets Eight Directors To Replace Darren Aronofsky

'Mr. and Mrs. Smith' helmer Doug Liman and 'Training Day' 's Antoine Fuqua reportedly among those in contention.
By Eric Ditzian

In March, just as Darren Aronofsky's "Black Swan" had crossed the $100 million mark domestically on its way to a superhero flick-like $310 million global haul, the director ditched his plans to helm an actual comic book film.

In announcing his plans to depart the Hugh Jackman-starring "The Wolverine," Aronofsky cited the project's lengthy production schedule and said, "I was not comfortable being away from my family for that length of time." Ever since, "Wolverine" has been wandering in the swirling winds of online rumors, as the likes of David Slade ("New Moon") and Duncan Jones ("The Source Code") were said to have interest in taking on helming duties.

Now, according to Variety, Fox has narrowed the directorial search to eight candidates: José Padilha ("Elite Squad 1"), Doug Liman ("Mr. and Mrs. Smith"), Antoine Fuqua ("Training Day"), Mark Romanek ("Never Let Me Go"), Justin Lin ("Fast Five"), Gavin O'Connor (the forthcoming "Warrior"), James Mangold ("Knight and Day") and Gary Shore (a director of commercials and a 'Wolverine' short film).

As Variety points out, the studio is targeting a diverse group of directors, from ones with blockbuster experience (Liman, Lin, Mangold) to music video skills (Romanek) to relatively untested talents (Shore). That's hardly a surprise. Aronofsky, after all, had been known as more of an art-house darling than a director ready — and interested — in taking on more commercial fare.

Although Fox is pushing forward with "Wolverine," the project still has many question marks clouding its future. The film is said to take place largely in Japan, and the recent earthquakes there have reportedly disrupted plans to shoot on location.

"Fox is very anxious to make the movie and we're moving ahead full steam to find another director," Jackman said in March. "We need to find another director and once we've found that, we'll be able to know."

Who would you like to see at the helm of "Wolverine"? Tell us in the comments!

Darwiniana ? NCSE news: Louisiana case

Posted in Evolution, you've got mail at 1:02 pm by nemo

Dear Friends of NCSE,

The effort to repeal Louisiana?s antievolution law was stymied in
committee. Creationism is officially unwelcome in Britain?s new free
schools. Previously in Louisiana, the Baton Rouge Advocate endorsed
the effort to repeat the state?s antievolution law, while Barbara
Forrest explained in detail why the effort is necessary.

REPEAL EFFORT FAILS IN COMMITTEE

Despite the overwhelming support for SB 70 from scientific and
educational organizations around the state and across the country, the
Louisiana Senate Education Committee voted 5-1 to shelve the bill on
May 26, 2011, according to a blogger for the Baton Rouge Advocate (May
26, 2011). If enacted, SB 70 would have repealed Louisiana Revised
Statutes 17:285.1, which implemented the so-called Louisiana Science
Education Act, passed and enacted in 2008. As Barbara Forrest recently
explained in a column for Louisiana Progress (May 18, 2011), the LSEA
?was promoted only by creationists. Neither parents, nor science
teachers, nor scientists requested it. No one wanted it except the
Louisiana Family Forum (LFF), a religious organization that lobbies
aggressively for its regressive agenda, and the Discovery Institute
(DI), a creationist think tank in Seattle, Washington, that couldn?t
care less about Louisiana children.?

Among those testifying for SB 70 were Zack Kopplin, the Baton Rouge
high school student who spearheaded the repeal effort; Ian Binns, a
professor of science education at Louisiana State University; the
Reverend C. Welton Gaddy (by proxy), the president of The Interfaith
Alliance; and Patsye Peebles, a veteran science teacher, recipient of
the Louisiana Outstanding Biology Teacher Award, and cofounder of the
Louisiana Coalition for Science. Among those testifying against the
bill were representatives of the Louisiana Family Forum, the radical
religious right group that orchestrated the passage of the LSEA, and a
representative of Governor Bobby Jindal, who signed the LSEA into law
in 2008 despite the exhortation of educators and scientists, including
Brown University?s Arthur Landy, who expressed his hope that his
former student ?doesn?t do anything that would hold back the next
generation of Louisiana?s doctors.?

NCSE?s executive director Eugenie C. Scott, who watched the webcast of
the hearings, commented, ?Listening to the opponents of the repeal
bill during this hearing was like listening to old tapes of Henry
Morris [of the Institute for Creation Research]. There was even the
claim that evolution is dubious because it is ?origin science? ? a
notion to be found only in creationist literature.? Reflecting on the
result of the committee?s vote, she expressed disappointment, but
emphasized her admiration for Kopplin, the Louisiana Coalition for
Science, SB 70?s sponsor Karen Carter Peterson (D-District 5), and the
host of Louisianans who worked to rally support for the bill. ?This is
more than anyone ever expected when Zack launched his campaign last
fall,? she added, ?and with such a strong response in favor of
repealing the antievolution bill, I feel confident that we haven?t
heard the last of the attempt to restore the integrity of science
education in Louisiana.?

CREATIONISM BANNED FROM ?FREE SCHOOLS? IN BRITAIN

?Free school bids from groups advocating creationism and intelligent
design as scientific theories will not be approved, according to the
first government guidance on the issue,? reports the Times Education
Supplement (May 20, 2011). The guidelines by which applications to
establish free schools are assessed provide, ?Creationism, intelligent
design and similar ideas must not be taught as valid scientific
theories,? and a spokesperson for the Department for Children,
Education, and Schools told The Telegraph (May 20, 2011) that the
Secretary of Education, Michael Gove, ?will not accept any academy or
free school proposal which plans to teach creationism in the science
curriculum or as an alternative to accepted scientific theories.?

Like charter schools in the United States, ?free schools? are
established by local groups of parents, teachers, businesses, colleges
and universities, and/or non-profit organizations, but funded directly
by the government. Allowing free schools was a key point of the
Conservative Party?s education platform in the 2010 British election.
After the present coalition government took office, free schools ?were
given approval in the Academies Act 2010, which paved the way for
existing state primary and secondary schools to become academies,?
according to the BBC (May 23, 2011). As of May 2011, the Department
for Children, Education, and Schools had received 323 proposals from
groups wanting to establish a free school; between ten and twenty are
expected to open by September 2011.

The guidelines were issued just a week after a new campaign ?
Creationism In Schools Isn?t Science, or CrISIS ? petitioned the
government to enforce its stated position on the teaching of
creationism. ?Creationism is known, and officially acknowledged, to be
contrary to scientific fact,? the petition argued. ?We therefore
demand that creationism should not be presented as a valid scientific
position, nor creationist websites and resources be promoted, in
publicly funded schools or in any youth activities run on publicly
funded school premises.? Endorsed by the National Secular Society, the
religious thinktank Ekklesia, and the British Centre for Science
Education, CrISIS was started by a concerned parent, Laura Horner,
after a young-earth creationist was invited to speak at her son?s
school in Exeter.

?The guidance is wonderful news and shows the Government taking a step
in the right direction,? Horner told the Times Education Supplement.
?We now expect the ban to be extended to apply to any activity taking
place in school.? (The new guidelines concern only free schools; in
the Exeter case, the creationist speaker was allowed to present his
views as scientifically credible in a religious education class in a
state school. Since creationism is often discussed in religious
education, such classes offer a possible venue for creationism to be
improperly presented as scientifically credible.) Roger Stanyard of
the British Centre for Science Education told The Telegraph (May 20,
2011) that his organization was ?largely happy? with the guidelines,
but warned, ?It depends how it is implemented. People will always find
ways around the rules.?

BATON ROUGE ADVOCATE ENDORSES REPEAL EFFORT

The Baton Rouge Advocate endorsed the repeal of Louisiana?s
antievolution law, editorially writing (May 23, 2011), ?We hope the
Louisiana Legislature takes the opportunity it has this year to repeal
entirely the misnamed ?Louisiana Science Education Act.?? The Advocate
thus joins the New Orleans City Council, the American Association for
the Advancement of Science, the Louisiana Science Teachers
Association, and forty-three Nobel laureates in calling for a repeal
of what the newspaper termed ?an embarrassment for our state.?

Interestingly, the Advocate focused on ?a facet of the ?Louisiana
Science Education Act? that goes beyond the crackpot notion that the
theory of evolution is somehow flawed?: its reference to global
warming and human cloning. ?What this country?s students do not need
is to transplant the mythology of creationism as a persecuted science
into other fields, such as climatology or genetics,? the editorial
observed, worrying that ?inaccuracy based on political pressure could
be replicated as it has in the evolution debate. ? It could harm
education more than just in biology classrooms.?

?RESPECT REQUIRES REPEAL?

Barbara Forrest explains the murky origins and adverse effects of the
so-called Louisiana Science Education Act ? and argues that respect
for the integrity of science education requires a repeal of the
antievolution law ? in a long essay posted at the Louisiana Progress
website on May 18, 2011.

?This law was promoted only by creationists,? Forrest recounts.
?Neither parents, nor science teachers, nor scientists requested it.
No one wanted it except the Louisiana Family Forum (LFF), a religious
organization that lobbies aggressively for its regressive agenda, and
the Discovery Institute (DI), a creationist think tank in Seattle,
Washington, that couldn?t care less about Louisiana children.?

?Besides damaging Louisiana?s already tattered reputation concerning
public education,? Forrest continues, ?the LSEA has done tangible
harm, the most compelling example being the SICB boycott? ? where the
Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology boycotted New Orleans
in favor of Salt Lake City for its 2011 meeting, with the cost to the
city estimated at 2.7 million dollars.

Perhaps worse, antievolutionists have not only sought to undermine the
law?s provision allowing challenges to unsuitable supplementary
materials but also invoked the law to support proposals to teach
creationism in the public schools of at least two parishes (Livingston
and Tangipahoa) and to attack the treatment of evolution in biology
textbooks proposed for adoption by the state.

Forrest concludes, ?If the legislature and Gov. Jindal truly want to
make Louisiana a great place to live and raise a family rather than
merely a colorful tourist attraction and the object of
catastrophe-induced pity, the legislature must repeal this law.?
Senate Bill 70, which would do so, is currently scheduled for a
hearing in the Senate Education Committee on May 26, 2011, according
to Zack Kopplin of Repeal Creationism.

A member of NCSE?s board of directors, Forrest is Professor of
Philosophy at Southeastern Louisiana University and a founder of the
Louisiana Coalition for Science. Louisiana Progress informs, engages,

policymakers to lead Louisiana into the 21st century.

Clearwire commits to LTE as Verizon weighs Wi-Fi expansion

Clearwire COO Erik Prusch revealed that the ailing company behind Sprint's 4G service will eventually switch its 4G offering from WiMAX to LTE technology, according to an industry report. Meanwhile, Verizon execs said that the carrier might leverage its LTE investment to offer data pooling on family plans, and will also invest more in Wi-Fi, according to two other reports.

Clearwire will eventually transition from a WiMAX-based 4G network to an LTE (Long-Term Evolution) 4G network, Clearwire COO Erik Prusch revealed in an interview with CNet. The company raised the possibility of a transition to LTE back in May 2010, but has now committed to the change.

Using Clearwire technology, Sprint -- which owns a roughly 50 percent share of the company -- launched its 4G network in 2008, years ahead of its competitors. While Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T are just now catching up, the types of 4G technology they've chosen -- LTE and the LTE precursor HSPA+ -- are expected to ultimately be the leading 4G technologies worldwide.

Sprint has had success with WiMAX-based phones such as its Android-powered HTC Evo 4G and HTC Evo Shift 4G (pictured). However, as Verizon's LTE has come online, it has become clear that WiMAX can't t keep pace. As Clint Boulton writes in a recent, positive review of Sprint's Samsung Nexus S 4G, "The Nexus S 4G is certainly faster than the original Nexus S Google launched last December on T-Mobile's network. However, I used the new Nexus after testing both the HTC ThunderBolt 4G and Samsung Droid Charge on Verizon Wireless' 4G LTE network. If you're guessing Verizon won that race, you'd be right."

According to the May 19 Cnet report, Prusch said, "WiMAX to date has been a very good technology choice for us." He added, "We were able to take advantage of the speed to market before LTE was even a glimmer in anyone's eye. But we recognize the ecosystem in the U.S. will be larger for LTE than WiMAX, so we are conscious of that."

Clearwire has had funding issues for some time now. For the first quarter of this year, it reported revenue of $242 million and added 1.8 million subscribers, but nonetheless reported a loss of $226.96 million. With $1.2 billion of cash on hand, the company is feeling forced to pace its retail efforts, despite retail customers being responsible for the majority of its revenue ($181.1 million of that first-quarter $242 million).

Still, Clearwire will wait to make the transition to LTE, Prusch said, until the ecosystem and its technology are mature. "We are technology agnostic," he was quoted as saying. "We don't believe that customers buy a technology. They buy fast and reliable access to a data network."

Clearwire and Sprint rely heavily on one another, to a degree some analysts find problematic. While Sprint has struggled a bit to compete against the iPhone-wielding AT&T and Verizon, it has had to financially assist Clearwire as a means of looking out for its 4G network.

Like Prusch, Sprint CEO Dan Hesse has hinted that LTE is in Sprint's future. Hesse told the Financial Times in July 2010 that Sprint was considering rolling out LTE alongside its WiMAX technology.

"We have spectrum resources where we could add LTE if we choose to do that, on top of the WiMAX network,? Hesse told FT. "The beauty of having a lot of spectrum is we have a lot of flexibility."

In the same report, FT added that T-Mobile parent company Deutsche Telekom had considered purchasing Sprint and merging it with T-Mobile, but ultimately decided against it, given that Sprint was invested in WiMAX, while T-Mobile's 4G roadmap had it moving from HSPA+ to LTE.

AT&T, whose 4G path likewise includes transitioning from HSPA+ to LTE, has since made a $39 billion bid for T-Mobile, which has enough spectrum to enable AT&T to eventually extend 4G service to more than 97 percent of the country. Yet, this is still not enough capital, T-Mobile CEO Phillip Humm has said, to enable it to follow through on its LTE plans.

Clearwire?s Prusch remained positive about the company's outlook, insisting that it currently has more spectrum than anyone, and just needs to get to the point of growing its revenue organically. In December, the company sold $1.3 billion of debt to fund the continued buildout of its WiMAX network.

"Our subscriber numbers are growing rapidly, and the usage stats show us that there is a desire and demand for more capacity," he said. "So we feel we are well-positioned to meet those needs. We have more spectrum assets than anyone else, and we can handle more capacity than any other carrier."

Verizon tips long-term service plans

Sprint rival Verizon Wireless is quickly rolling out its LTE network to positive reviews. The carrier launched its first LTE phone in March with the Android-driven HTC ThunderBolt (pictured), followed by several others. Now, the company is revealing new plans based on the increased bandwidth made available by the 4G technology.

Speaking at the Reuters Global Technology Summit, Verizon CFO Fran Shammo suggested Verizon might eventually offer data pooling on its Family plans. Just as carriers have sold business customers large pools of voice minutes that a number of employee devices can dip into, members of a family could sip from a shared data source, she explained.

"At some point, you are going to have mega-plans [for data], and people are going to share that mega-plan based on the number of devices within their family," Shammo said at the Summit, according to a May 21 report from PC World.

Meanwhile, Verizon CTO Tony Melone, at the TIA conference in Grapevine, Texas, revealed that the carrier plans to rely more heavily on Wi-Fi, according to a May 19 Gigaom report. Melone was quoted as saying Verizon would increase Wi-Fi services both to consumers at home and in large venues such as stadiums.

In a sideways dig against AT&T, which last year launched a Wi-Fi hotzones program to complement its 3G network, Melone added "We won't use it ubiquitously, to cover up flaws and capacity limitations."

At the Texas event, according to Gigaom, Melone was also said to have stated that by 2013, reliance on 4G LTE might be ubiquitous enough that Verizon can begin shipping devices without 3G radios.

On May 23, Verizon announced two new 4G deployment areas -- Springfield and Dayton, Ohio, and Harrisburg, Pa. -- both of which are scheduled to go live June 16. During the first quarter alone, Verizon added 906,000 wireless subscribers, thanks in large part to the iPhone 4 and the HTC ThunderBolt.

3 Types of Real Estate Investments in Singapore | W3 PR

Real estate investment is a great opportunity to put your hard-earned cash to work. With Real Estate properties, you can get a return on your investment at a historically better price than any cash or banking vehicle. You may think that Singapore, because of its small size and limited space, would not be a good place to invest ? but in fact, it is this scarcity that makes it attractive. Less space means higher prices ? but also higher returns. There?s also different types of real estate investments in Singapore ? let?s discuss some of them in detail:

Condominiums

Condominiums or condos are perhaps the most popular type of property in Singapore, because it does make use of a small space. A condo unit is part of an entire building, and a buyer would then own this piece out of the building, but share some common spaces with other tenants (like hallways, exterior areas, parking garage.) Condos are convenient for those working professionals because they are often located near prime spots ? close to their work or transportation systems. Because the space can sometimes be small, single people or couples with no children prefer this type of space. While condo unit owners sacrifice space, they do get other benefits ? facilities such as swimming pool, tennis court, private security, minimal responsibilities, amenities and proximity to work or entertainment.

Landed Homes or Bungalows

A landed home which usually is a terrace, semi-detached or detached (bungalow) is one that is usually located outside the central business district. They are in most cases larger than most apartment or condo units and often have an outdoor space, like a garden & yard. Properties like these are selling like hotcakes ? and, as you can imagine, only a limited amount is available in Singapore. Families are the number one market for such properties, as they are often located near good schools and other amenities. Because of the limited availability of Singapore landed homes, the values of these properties tend go up up quickly as they are snatched up.

REITs

Perhaps you want to invest in properties, but don?t want the responsibilities of a landlord? A Real Estate Investment Trust or REIT may be the best solution for you. Basically, a company would buy several investment properties, (which can also cover commercial properties) and put the together as an investment vehicle people can buy into ? like a stock where shareholders can own a piece of the company (in this case ? the properties listed in the REIT). In Singapore, they are called S-REITs and there are now 20 of them available on the SGX. The profits from investing in REITs come from the rental income, which are distributed to the shareholders.

Investing in Real Estate is not relegated to just the rich these days -any ordinary person with extra income can put their money in real estate. The Singapore market is hot these days, and one of the few unaffected by worldwide financial crisis, which is something to think about if you?re looking to park your money somewhere safe and where it can work hard for you.
