How Smart Is Advanced Artificial Intelligence? Try Preschool Level

One of the most advanced artificial intelligence systems is about as smart as preschooler, new research suggests. But your preschooler may have better common sense.

An artificial intelligence (AI) system known as ConceptNet4 has an IQ equivalent to that of a 4-year-old child, according to the study. But the machine's abilities don?t evenly match those of a child: the computer system aced its vocabulary test, but lacked the prudence and sound judgment of a preschooler.

?We?re still very far from programs with common sense ? AI that can answer comprehension questions with the skill of a child of 8,? study co-author Robert Sloan, a computer scientist at the University of Illinois at Chicago, said in a statement.

Artificial intelligence has been getting exponentially smarter for decades, and some technologists even believe the singularity ? the point when machine intelligence will overtake humans ? is near. Along the way, we?ve seen the trivia-playing computer Watson trounced trivia maven Ken Jennings at Jeopardy, and chess program Deep Blue eventually beat chess master Gary Kasparov in 1997. [Super-Intelligent Machines: 7 Robotic Futures]

But despite those high profile wins, AI's track record is decidedly spotty. Machines can't yet be programed to form intuitions about the physical world without doing extensive calculations, and they seem to fail at answering open-ended questions.

In the new study, researchers decided to test out just how close to human intelligence AI has come. They administered the verbal portions of a standard IQ test called the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence Test to ConceptNet4.

The machine's score was similar to that of a 4-year-old child. But this was no ordinary child: its intelligence was all over the map. The program scored highly on the vocabulary and similarity portions of the test, but floundered on comprehension sections, which are heavy on the "why" questions.

"If a child had scores that varied this much, it might be a symptom that something was wrong," Sloan said in a statement.

Not surprisingly, the computer also seemed to lack common sense. Through rich life experience, most people gather subconscious knowledge of the world that they rely on to make quick, wise judgments.

AI's "childhood" is positively deprived in comparison. For instance, AI may know the boiling point of water, but people know better the importance of steering clear of a hot stove.

"As babies, we crawled around and yanked on things and learned that things fall. We yanked on other things and learned that dogs and cats don?t appreciate having their tails pulled. Life is a rich learning environment," Sloan said.

What To Ask Franchises For Sale. ? Business ? Franchising

betterluck.jpg

When looking for franchises for sale in the UK you should be aware that all franchise offers have to disclose a document to all prospective buyers a certain amount of time before any contract can be signed. Make sure that your read the entire document and understand all of the criteria enclosed within the franchise opportunity. We are now going to look over the first set of criteria that needs to be researched that will be included in the document. This first set of criteria will help you get a clear idea of what to ask the franchise before you sign anything.

We will start off by looking at the background of the franchise. In the document it must state that directors of the business and what they have done previous, take into account not only their business experience but also their experience in running franchise systems. The document should also state how long they have been with the business and show their track record with this company. Looking at franchises for sale with an inexperienced franchise owner is more of a risk than investing in an established experienced franchise owner.

The next criteria that the document takes into account is the legislation regarding the franchise and the franchise directors. The information in the document will detail any convictions like fraud, business law, or other similar offences in the UK. It will also detail if the current franchise has any involvement with law cases or civil actions in the franchises history. If any of these come up in the document and a number of cases have been reported this will indicate that the franchise has not been living up to their agreement and the franchisees have been unhappy with the service offered. There has been cases where names have been withheld from this document to hide old cases concerning the individual.

The document will detail any circumstances involving the directors or the franchise itself and whether they have been declared bankrupt at any time. This information will help you gain a better understating of the financial security of the franchise opportunity and help you anticipate if the franchise is capable of upholding all of their promises.

The final section we look into in this article is the criteria of restrictions that will be in the document. When looking for franchises for sale you will always come across restrictions with every franchise. These restrictions will be a good starting point when choosing a franchise opportunity. They restrictions limit how you manage and operate each franchise, the document should detail information like where you will purchase your products from, the products you sell, the customers that you sell the products too and in which location you are allowed to sell your products in. You must understand these restrictions before signing any agreement as these will be the basis of how you operate the franchise and in the long run make it successful. Probably the most significant restriction is location, the franchise may have numerous outlets in a county and the restrictions of opening a franchise in a certain area may be beneficial for one franchisee but severely damage the incom e of another franchisee if opened close by.

The Monitor Breakfast

Sen. Carl Levin (D), chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, believes military sexual-assault cases should remain under the control of the chain of command. Many in his party disagree. What's his rationale?

Saving lives: Food For The Poor makes $5m donation to University Hospital

Food For The Poor (FFP) has boosted the limited dialysis/kidney-care treatment resources of the Haemodialysis Unit of the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) with a donation of equipment and medical supplies valued at more than $5 million.

Among the items handed over were resuscitators, laryngoscope blades, infant and adult digital scales, pulse oximeters, defibrillators, coagulation timers, patient chairs and computers.

The charity came to the aid of the UHWI Haemodialysis Unit after a request from the Jamaica Kidney Kids Foundation Ltd (JKKFL), a support group for children with chronic kidney problems. This followed a series of reports from a Gleaner Editors' Forum in February, which focused on the plight of children in Jamaica with kidney disease.

The Haemodialysis Unit is the only health facility in Jamaica which provides dialysis for children younger than 12 years old. The donation will help in significantly improving the availability of key equipment used in treating children suffering from chronic kidney disease.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Susan Moore, director of recipient services at FFP, articulated the commitment of the charity organisation in helping to make a major difference in the health sector.

"It's all part of what we do in Jamaica, by empowering Jamaicans. Definitely, the poorest of the poor will benefit," she said.

Dr Marsha Gooden, paediatrician/paediatric nephrologist at the UHWI, asserted that the donation would enable the hospital to better serve patients, both young and old, who are suffering from renal failure.

"We want to thank Food For The Poor for this donation, which will help us to better care for patients. All the items will be adequately utilised," said Gooden.

Dr Maolynne Miller, founder of JKKFL, expressed confidence that the FFP donation would help to advance the quality of patient care to patients with kidney disease.

"This will improve the quality of care for children affected by kidney problems, and give accurate measurements for various types of renal diagnoses," said Miller.

"It's fantastic to share with the adult Haemodialysis Unit, because this is where the children stay at this time. Everything that was donated will be shared with the hospital."

Describing the donation as "ideal and very useful", Miller said: "Many thanks to Food For The Poor."

EASING THE BURDEN

Data from the JKKFL showed that each year, at least 40 children in Jamaica under the age of 16 years are diagnosed with chronic kidney/renal disease. Of that number, three to six children will be diagnosed with chronic kidney failure. Between 1985 and 2006, 30 of the 48 children diagnosed with chronic kidney failure died. FFP is helping to ensure that the already overburdened dialysis treatment facilities are increased to the benefit of the children.

FFP also made a donation to the Paediatric Nephrology Service of the UHWI to assist with specific blood tests needed by children on dialysis. Receiving the donation of $50,000, MicroLabs Ltd committed to reducing the cost of blood tests for children on dialysis by more than 50 per cent.

How Apple could use a fingerprint scan to unlock your iPhone

Apple has stayed quiet ? as usual ? on what it?s been up to with AuthenTec since it acquired the mobile security company a year ago. But a patent filing offers some insight into what the two are partnering on: fingerprint sensors that can be embedded into displays.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Thursday published a patent application attributed to Apple based on work done by AuthenTec?s co-founder, as noted by AppleInsider this morning. The patent is is for a chip that can be embedded in a mobile device that will sense fingerprints on a display as a way of authenticating a user before giving them access to a device.

Apple?s patent sounds like it will allow the chip to be inserted in the device, but gives Apple?s device engineers more room to work with than traditional biometric security solutions.?From the application:

When using a semiconductor fingerprint sensor, or integrated circuit fingerprint sensor, in a portable electronic device, for example, a mobile telephone, it may be desirable to locate the integrated circuit of the fingerprint sensor separately from the finger sensing region. Separating the finger sensing integrated circuit (IC) from the finger sensing area may be particularly advantageous when the finger sensing area is relatively thin and transparent so that it may be placed over the top of a display of the portable electronic device, and wherein the IC may be located in a nearby non-display region of the portable electronic device.

There?s been a lot of speculation that the next iPhone will have a fingerprint-sensing security feature. Much of that has been assuming the sensor would be under the home button. But being able to put it in a display could mean iOS?s traditional ?swipe to unlock? could seamlessly include another layer of security ? for an iPhone, an iPad, the touchpad of a MacBook ? or possibly even a future wearable device.

Of course, there?s the standard caveat for any Apple patent filing: the company files a lot of patents and it doesn?t necessarily mean the technology will make its way to Apple product some day. But in this case, it?s the first patent application to come out of Apple?s purchase of AuthenTec. We know the two companies were working on a project together even before the acquisition, and this is a good indication of the direction the two are going in.

Social Media Helps Pin Down Source of Foodborne ... - Health.com

July 18, 2013

THURSDAY, July 18 (HealthDay News) ? Social media played an important role in helping identify the source of a foodborne strep throat outbreak among people who attended a Minnesota high school dance team banquet, a case report says.

Of the 63 people who attended the banquet, 18 developed strep throat less than three days later. When multiple posts appeared on the dance team?s Facebook page about ill team members and relatives, a parent got in touch with the state health department.

Health officials interviewed about 100 people by telephone, including those who attended the banquet, people in the homes of attendees and those who did not attend but ate banquet leftovers.

Investigators also conducted DNA analysis of strep bacteria samples taken from the throats of people who became ill. These steps narrowed the possible source of the outbreak to cooked pasta served at the banquet, according to the report published online July 18 in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases.

?We suspect cooked food was contaminated by respiratory droplets from a person who carried the strep bacteria in the throat when the food was cooling or reheating,? lead author Dr. Sarah Kemble, of the Minnesota Department of Health, said in a journal news release. ?The food probably was not kept hot or cold enough to stop bacterial growth.?

Both the parent who prepared the pasta and a child in the same household reported having strep throat three weeks before the banquet.

?Foodborne illness is not limited to diseases that cause vomiting and diarrhea,? Kemble noted.

The rapid communication possible among a large group of people using social media played an important role in the investigation. A more formalized use of social media for disease surveillance and outbreak investigations could benefit public health in some cases, the authors said.

Stocks lower as market awaits Bernanke views

stocks

Stocks slipped at the market opening on Tuesday as investors digested a handful of mixed earnings reports, a day before Federal Chairman Ben Bernanke was due to give a clearer signal of the central bank's policy direction.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was 12 points lower in early trading, and the S&P 500 and Nasdaq were also slightly in negative territory. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, traded below 14.

Global investors remain largely focused on Bernanke's annual testimony on Wednesday, from which they hope to garner further clues on the direction of monetary stimulus. Last week, the markets rallied after the Fed chief said the central bank would keep its stimulus policies in place for some time.

"In recent weeks the message that he's given is that we have seen signs of improvements in the U.S. economy and we're going to move towards tapering," said Robert Rennie, global head of currency strategy at Westpac.

"Then he gives us the message that we got last week, so I think markets will be cautious ahead of Bernanke's testimony," said Robert Rennie, global head of currency strategy at Westpac.

In earnings news, Dow component Coca-Cola matched analyst expectations of 63 cents a share in second-quarter profit, but missed on the revenue end with $12.75 billion against expectations of $12.95 billion.

Also, Goldman Sachs was the latest participant in the parade of big U.S. financial institutions to report blowout profits. The company reported earnings per share of $3.70, well ahead of the $2.82 estimates. Revenue also easily beat expectations, sending shares higher.

Johnson & Johnson edged higher after the drugmaker topped expectations, thanks to strong sales of prescription drugs and medical devices, and lifted its full-year earnings forecast.

On the economic front, the consumer price index gained 0.5 percent in June thanks to a gain in gasoline prices. Economists polled by Reuters had expected consumer inflation to increase 0.3 percent last month. Excluding food and energy costs, the core reading edged up 0.2 percent.

Industrial production edged up 0.3 percent in June after an unchanged reading in May, according to the Federal Reserve. Economists polled by Reuters had expected a gain of 0.2 percent.

The National Association of Home Builders was releasing the housing market index for June later. Economists polled by Reuters forecast a reading of 52.

In addition, Kansas City Fed President Esther George, who is a voting member of the Fed's policy committee, was scheduled to speak on the economy later in the afternoon.

Elsewhere, Japan's benchmark index hit a new seven-week high and as earnings season picked up.

The Nikkei 225 hit its highest levels since May 24, and the yen weakened to the 100 handle against the U.S. dollar, after Japan's economics minister, Akira Amari, said the government will go ahead with a planned sales tax hike.

'Aggressive' fire forces evacuation of S. California camp for kids with ...

By M. Alex Johnson, Staff Writer, NBC News

A wildfire that has destroyed homes and forced the evacuation of a camp for children with cancer spread further into Southern California on Wednesday, and there was no sign that firefighters were any closer to stopping it.

The fire, burning in the San Jacinto Mountains southwest of Palm Springs, grew to more than 14,000 acres, up from 9,000 on Tuesday night. Fire officials said it was only 10 percent contained, the same as the day before.

The wildfire has destroyed at least six homes, spread heavy smoke and forced the evacuation of Camp Ronald McDonald. Sarah Orth, the camp's executive director, told parents that campers and volunteers were instructed at dinner to pack up their belongings and were taken by bus to a nearby high school that serves as an evacuation center.

A fleet of buses then took them away from the blaze late Tuesday.

Evacuations were also in effect for about 50 homes in the area, as well as the Living Free Animal Sanctuary and the Zen Mountain Center.

A woman watches flames from the Mountain Fire move over a hill.

On Tuesday, more than 1,500 firefighters poured into the area, bringing the total force to more than 2,000, as the fire doubled in size. It was upgraded to a Type 1 response, the highest there is, and 15 helicopters and 10 air tankers were deployed.

The so-called Mountain Fire ignited Monday afternoon. The cause is under investigation, fire spokeswoman Melody Lardner said Wednesday.

Bob Poole, a spokesman for the National Forest Service, said that there was?no immediate direct threat to significantly populated areas.

Poole said six homes had been?destroyed in the Bonita Vista area, three of them mobile homes. Unspecified commercial property and a handful of other structures were destroyed in the Pine Springs area, he said.?

The flames were spreading through timber and chaparral, or shrubland, ?that are highly flammable because of the dry winter, officials said. Ninety-plus-degree daytime temperatures, humidity in the single digits and shifting winds have also presented fire crews with a challenging task.

Lardner said steep terrain was another challenge for firefighters.

NBC News' Henry Austin and Sossy Dombourian contributed to this report.

Iraq attacks make for deadly start to holy month

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Ramadan this year is shaping up to be the deadliest in Iraq since a bloody insurgency and rampant sectarian killings pushed the country to the edge of civil war in the wake of the U.S.-led invasion that ousted Saddam Hussein.

Suicide attacks, car bombings and other violence have killed more than 160 Iraqis just seven days into the Islamic holy month. The death toll in the first week of Ramadan hasn't been that high since 2007, intensifying fears that Iraq is slipping back into widespread chaos.

There seems to be little pattern in the range of targets, adding to the sense of unease in what is meant to be a month of spiritual growth and generosity.

Several of those killed over the past week died at a busy northern teashop while playing mehebis, a game where players hope to win sweets by guessing who among their opposing team is hiding a ring in their hands. Others were slain as they swam with friends, or as they shopped for festive evening dinners, or made their way home from mosques after late-night prayers.

Even for Iraqis who have grown used to hearing about random violence, day after day of double-digit death tolls makes for a worrying trend.

Many are choosing to stay home after breaking their dawn-to-dusk fast rather than venture out for festive family get-togethers and late-night cafe sessions, worrying they could be among the next victims.

"Al-Qaida and other terrorist groups ... have a better ability to move around and attack targets whenever it suits them," said Qais Hameed, an engineer and father of three from eastern Baghdad who quit going to a nearby coffee shop after breaking his daily fast. "This just shows that these terrorist groups are getting stronger while our security forces are getting weaker."

The bloodshed during Ramadan is an extension of a surge of attacks that has been roiling Iraq since the spring. It follows months of rallies by Iraq's minority Sunnis against the Shiite-led government over what they contend is second-class treatment and the unfair use of tough anti-terrorism measures against their sect.

The killings significantly picked up after Iraqi security forces launched a heavy-handed crackdown on a Sunni protest camp in the northern town of Hawija on April 23. A ferocious backlash followed the raid, with deadly bomb attacks and the return of sporadic gunbattles between insurgents and soldiers ? this time members of the Iraqi security forces rather than U.S. troops.

Ramadan, one of the holiest periods of the Islamic calendar, appears to be following that worrisome trend. It was always a popular period for attacks during the worst days of Iraq's violence as Shiite and Sunni extremists battled each other as well as U.S. forces.

The first Ramadan following the 2003 U.S.-led invasion began with a blistering wave of suicide bombings at police stations and the Red Cross headquarters.

In the years that followed, American military commanders braced for a surge in violence during the holy month. In 2007, 934 people were killed during Ramadan, including 236 the first week, according to an Associated Press count.

But as the war wound down, so did violence during the holy month.

"Ramadan used to be a bad month (for violence), but then over recent years it became a relatively quiet month," said John Drake, an Iraq specialist for the British-based AKE security consulting firm.

But, Drake added, "it already looks like this trend is being reversed."

U.N. figures show more than 2,500 Iraqis killed and many more wounded from April through June of this year. Another 331 have died so far in July, including two policemen targeted by gunmen in and around the restive northern city of Mosul on Wednesday, according to an AP count.

In a report released this week, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon described the scale of violence in recent months as alarming and said "rising inter-sectarian tensions are posing a major threat to stability and security in Iraq." Ban also warned that the increasingly sectarian-charged civil war raging in neighboring Syria is affecting Iraq's own political stability.

Although Iraq is officially neutral in the conflict, U.S. officials charge that it continues to allow flights suspected of carrying Iranian arms to transit its airspace. Iraqi officials have carried out some spot checks of Iranian planes and say they've found nothing. Iraqi fighters are meanwhile traveling to fight in Syria, with Shiites fighting alongside regime forces and Iraq's al-Qaida arm, now known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, siding with the mostly Sunni rebels.

No one has claimed responsibility for many of the terrorist attacks. But the indiscriminate and often coordinated bombings used in most of the attacks are a favorite tactic of al-Qaida, which hopes to stoke sectarian hatred and undermine Iraq's Shiite-led government.

Al-Qaida and other Sunni fundamentalists consider Shiites to be infidels. In the group's extremist ideology, acts of jihad including suicide bombings that are carried out during Ramadan are seen as more blessed than at other times of the year.

"The attackers believe that to martyr themselves during the holy month guarantees them some sort of benefit in the afterlife," said Drake, the security expert.

Interior Ministry spokesman Saad Maan Ibrahim agreed that militants' heightened spiritual fervor during Ramadan is partly to blame, along with the fact that large crowds often gather at soft targets such as mosques and cafes during Ramadan, giving attackers a chance to kill several people at once, he said.

A senior Iraqi intelligence official, who insisted on anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to journalists, offered a more mundane rationale.

"Security forces tend to speed up the searching process before iftar so they don't delay people who are fasting," he said, referring to the evening meal that ends the daylong Ramadan fast.

Ramadan last year also got off to a deadly start, with more than 140 killed during the first week. Unlike this year's daily drumbeat of violence, most of those died during a single dark day of attacks claimed by al-Qaida. Some days saw no deaths reported at all ? something that has yet to happen this time around.

Official says bomb kills 2 Afghans in east

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? An Afghan official says a bomb planted on a bicycle in eastern Nangarhar province has killed two civilians and wounded three others.

Provincial spokesman Ahmad Zia Abdulzai says the incident took place early Tuesday on the outskirts of Jalalabad, Nangarhar's capital.

He says the target of the bomb is unknown.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, but most such bombings are carried out by the Taliban.

NATO also says one of its service members has been killed in eastern Afghanistan on Tuesday from a "direct fire" attack.

Mayor Buttigieg issues statement on George Zimmerman verdict

Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Bend released the following statement on behalf of the verdict issued in the George Zimmerman murder trial.

It is clear that Trayvon Martin's death should never have happened. We must see in this case yet another compelling reason for all of us to judge one another only by the content of our character?never based on color, clothing, or appearance. Our community, and every community, will be better off when strangers look across difference and find reasons to respect, not fear, one another.

Zimmerman cleared; attorney says safety a concern

SANFORD, Fla. (AP) ? After a year and a half of living as a hermit, George Zimmerman emerged from a Florida courthouse a free man, cleared of all charges in the shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

His brother said the former neighborhood watch volunteer was still processing the reality that he wouldn't serve prison time for the killing, which Zimmerman, 29, has maintained was an act of self-defense. A jury found him not guilty of second-degree murder late Saturday night and declined to convict him on a lesser charge of manslaughter.

However, with many critics angry over his acquittal, his freedom will likely be limited.

Demonstrators upset with the verdict protested mostly peacefully in Florida and Atlanta overnight, but some broke windows and vandalized a police squad car in Oakland during protests in four California cities, authorities said.

"He's going to be looking over his shoulder the rest of his life," Robert Zimmerman Jr. said during an interview on CNN.

Martin's killing in February 2012 unleashed furious debate across the U.S. over racial profiling, self-defense and equal justice. Protesters across the country lashed out against police in the Orlando suburb of Sanford, outraged that it took 44 days for Zimmerman to be arrested. Many, including Martin's parents, claimed Zimmerman had racially profiled the unarmed black teen. Zimmerman identifies himself as Hispanic.

Six anonymous female jurors ? all but one of them white ? considered nearly three weeks of often wildly conflicting testimony over who was the aggressor on the rainy night the 17-year-old was shot while walking through the gated townhouse community where he was staying and where Zimmerman lived.

They deliberated more than 15 hours over two days before announcing late Saturday night that they had reached a verdict.

Defense attorney Mark O'Mara said in August 2012 that Zimmerman and his wife, Shellie, had been living "like a hermit" and were not working because they feared for their safety.

After Saturday's verdict, police, officials and civil rights leaders urged peace and told protesters not to resort to violence. While defense attorneys said they were thrilled with the outcome, O'Mara suggested Zimmerman's safety would be an ongoing concern.

"There still is a fringe element that wants revenge," O'Mara said. "They won't listen to a verdict of not guilty."

Those watching reacted strongly when the verdict was announced. Martin's mother and father were not in the courtroom when it was read; supporters of his family who had gathered outside yelled "No! No!" upon learning of the verdict.

Andrew Perkins, 55, a black resident of Sanford, angrily asked outside the courthouse: "How the hell did they find him not guilty?"

"He killed somebody and got away with murder," Perkins shouted, so angry he shook, looking toward the courthouse.

Trayvon Martin's brother, Jahvaris Fulton, said simply on Twitter: "Et tu America?" ? a reference to the Latin phrase "Et tu, Brute?" known as an expression of betrayal.

Protesters had taken to the streets late Saturday and into Sunday morning in Florida and other states, largely heeding the advice of officials and others who urged them not to resort to violence.

Authorities said in California media reports that some marchers in Oakland vandalized a police squad car and police formed a line to block some demonstrators there. TV news helicopter footage showed some people trying to start fires in the street and spray painting anti-police graffiti. The demonstration followed a raucous but largely peaceful protest in San Francisco and another in Los Angeles. An Oakland police dispatch said about 100 people protested there, but gave no word of any arrests

Celebrities also reacted. Beyonce called at a Nashville concert for a moment of silence for Martin. Elsewhere, rapper Young Jeezy released a song in Martin's memory and Russell Simmons called for a peace.

Martin family attorney Benjamin Crump acknowledged the disappointment of Trayvon Martin's supporters, ranking the teen alongside civil rights heroes Medgar Evers and Emmett Till in the history of the fight for equal justice. However, he said, "for Trayvon to rest in peace, we must all be peaceful."

Martin's family maintained the teen was not the aggressor, and prosecutors suggested Martin was scared because he was being followed by a stranger. Defense attorneys, however, claimed Martin knocked Zimmerman down and was slamming the older man's head against the concrete sidewalk when Zimmerman fired his gun.

Prosecutors called Zimmerman a liar and portrayed him as a "wannabe cop" vigilante who had grown frustrated by break-ins in his neighborhood committed primarily by young black men. Zimmerman assumed Martin was up to no good and took the law into his own hands, prosecutors said.

State Attorney Angela Corey said after the verdict that she believed second-degree murder was the appropriate charge because Zimmerman's mindset "fit the bill of second-degree murder."

"We charged what we believed we could prove," Corey said.

Zimmerman also had some supporters outside the courthouse, including Cindy Lenzen, 50, of Casslebury, and her brother, 52-year-old Chris Bay, who stood watching others chant slogans such as, "the whole system's guilty."

Lenzen and Bay ? who are white ? called the entire case "a tragedy," especially for Zimmerman.

"It's a tragedy that he's going to suffer for the rest of his life," Bay said. "No one wins either way. This is going to be a recurring nightmare in his mind every night."

Before a special prosecutor assigned to the case ordered Zimmerman's arrest, thousands of protesters had gathered in Sanford, Miami, New York and elsewhere, many wearing hoodies like the one Martin had on the night he died. They also carried Skittles and a can of iced tea, items Martin had in his pocket. President Barack Obama weighed in, saying that if he had a son, "he'd look like Trayvon."

Despite the racially charged nature of the case, race was barely mentioned at the trial.

"This case has never been about race or the right to bear arms," Corey said. "We believe this case all along was about boundaries, and George Zimmerman exceeded those boundaries."

One of the few mentions of race came from witness Rachel Jeantel, the Miami teen who was talking to Martin by phone moments before he was shot. She testified that he described being followed by a "creepy-ass cracker" as he walked through the neighborhood.

Jeantel gave some of the trial's most riveting testimony. She said she overheard Martin demand, "What are you following me for?" and then yell, "Get off! Get off!" before his cellphone went dead.

The jurors had to sort out clashing testimony from 56 witnesses in all, including police, neighbors, friends and family members.

For example, witnesses who got fleeting glimpses of the fight in the darkness gave differing accounts of who was on top. And Martin's parents and Zimmerman's parents both claimed that the person heard screaming for help in the background of a neighbor's 911 call was their son. Zimmerman had cuts and scrapes on his face and the back of his head, but prosecutors suggested the injuries were not serious.

To secure a second-degree murder conviction, prosecutors had to convince the jury that Zimmerman acted with a "depraved" state of mind ? that is, with ill will, hatred or spite.

To win a manslaughter conviction, prosecutors had to convince the jury only that Zimmerman killed without lawful justification.

Seattle church tells parishioners to 'raise Cain' over Zimmerman verdict

The senior pastor at Seattle?s Mt. Zion Baptist Church told followers to ?raise Cain? in response to Saturday?s acquittal of George Zimmerman in Sanford, Florida.

Zimmerman was accused of shooting 17-year-old Trayvon Martin to death nearly a year-and-a-half ago. His defense was Florida?s ?Stand Your Ground? law.

In his morning sermon, Rev. Aaron Williams said it was important for the African-American community to ?not allow this to die down? and to highlight perceived ?injustice? within the nation?s criminal justice system.

?We should be raising Cain because if we don?t,? Rev. Williams said, ?history has a way of repeating itself.

?There will be other young men who are pushed through the pipeline prison system if we don?t raise Cain,? he continued. ?There will be other issues of injustice in our society of we don?t raise Cain.?

Stating that ?God has the final word,? Rev. Williams also preached calm and peace during protests of the controversial verdict.

A rally was scheduled Sunday at 6 p.m. against the Florida jury?s decision.

Meet Utilite, a $99 quad-core ARM-based PC running Ubuntu

Meet Utilite, a $99 quadcore ARMbased PC running Ubuntu

That box you see above? It's a quad-core ARM-based PC running Ubuntu called Utilite. The desktop system, made by Compulab, will be available next month starting at $99. While there are plenty of Android dongles built on ARM SoCs out there, few (if any) can truly offer a PC-like experience. The company -- best known for its Trim Slice, Fit-PC and MintBox products -- wants to change this.

Utilite packs a single-, dual- or quad-core Freescale i.MX6 Cortex-A9 MPCore processor (up to 1.2 GHz), up to 4GB of DDR3 RAM (1066MHz), an mSATA SSD (up to 512GB), WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0, HDMI and DVI-D outputs, two Gigabit Ethernet sockets, four USB 2.0 ports, one micro-USB OTG connector, audio jacks (analog and S/PDIF), a micro-SD XD slot and two ultra-mini RS232 interfaces -- phew!

Rounding things up is support for OpenGL ES, OpenVG and OpenCL EP plus multi-stream 1080p H.264 on-chip decoding. All this fits in just 5.3 x 3.9 x 0.8 inches (135 x 100 x 21mm) and only consumes 3-8W using a 10-16V supply (unregulated). Those are impressive specs for the price, and the system sure looks positioned to compete favorably with some of the x86 boxes out there.

Washington Township native John Yurkow named head coach at Penn

As the No. 1 assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the University of Pennsylvania baseball team, John Yurkow spent nearly two months in a tough spot after it was learned that John Cole would not be back as the head baseball coach next season.

But after an extensive nationwide search process, the Quakers solved many of Yurkow?s problems and made the wait worthwhile by promoting him to the head job after seven years as an assistant.

?There are recruits who we?ve been working with for months,? said Yurkow, a Gloucester Catholic High School graduate and Washington Township native. ?Not knowing (who would be head coach) was a distraction, it was tough at times. You make the decision to stick with this thing, if it doesn?t work out as a head coach you can stay as an assistant. But it worked out really well, it was worth it in the end.

?They asked me to stay on and keep working, and I told them if I was going to do that I had interest in the position. I felt pretty good throughout the whole thing, I?ve been there seven years. I knew all the answers, I felt like as an internal candidate I had an advantage. A lot of the younger alums got behind me, the support was great.?

Yurkow has spent more than a decade as an assistant since graduating from Rowan in 2000, first with the Profs and four years at Duke before coming back to the Philadelphia area.

With all the work he?d done over the years ? in addition to leading recruiting he was also a hitting and fielding instructor and third-base coach ? the thought of becoming a head coach had already been in his mind. That made the whirlwind nature of getting the job last week easier to deal with.

?I started getting the itch I?d say three or four years ago,? Yurkow said. ?I?ve done the travel, the fundraising, I?m ready for the opportunity. I?ve had to deal with all those types of things. You definitely have to wear a lot of hats, whether it?s as an assistant coach or head coach.

?I was in California, I got the call on Tuesday. I flew home on Thursday night, went out to dinner with my wife, daughter and parents and then flew out again the next morning to Atlanta and just got back Thursday. I was home for a night, when I got back it was nice to be in the office for a few days. It couldn?t have worked out better, I couldn?t be any happier.?

Being at an Ivy League school like Penn which doesn?t offer athletic scholarships presents unique challenges that Yurkow?s well acquainted with. The trip to California shows how far he must go to find players who not only have the physical ability to play for the Quakers, but also the academic qualifications that otherwise eliminate so many top talents.

?When it comes down to it, Penn isn?t a hard place to sell,? said Yurkow. ?They?re getting one of the top 10 educations in the world. The upgrades in recent years to the facilities have been amazing. You?re recruiting academic guys, but there aren?t a lot out there so you have to go all over. When you go to events you don?t have to look at 95 percent of the kids because they can?t get in there.?

Despite the high standards, Yurkow has managed to bring in some big South Jersey names to star for the Quakers over the years. Lenape?s Jeff McGarry is a rising junior pitcher/outfielder, pitcher Vince Voiro (Cherry Hill West) was drafted twice and third baseman Dan Williams (Seneca) left Penn holding three offensive school records.

While the talent has definitely improved with Yurkow leading the way on the recruiting trail, it hasn?t always shown up in the standings. Last year?s team was 22-21, but just 7-13 in the Ivy League with seven straight conference losses to end the season. Getting back on top of the standings is one of his top priorities.

?It?s been a while since they won an Ivy League title, we?re getting close to 20 years and that?s something I think we?ve got to take care of soon,? he said. ?We finished a game above .500 and we only lost three seniors. Our incoming class is very good. We should be able to compete.

?We?ve played better against scholarship schools than teams in our league. That shows the talent?s there, we?re not that far away.?

Yurkow still plans on keeping a big hand in the recruiting, though assistant coach Mike Santello will move up to coordinator after proving invaluable during the transition period. And when the head coaching job hits full speed in a month or two, he?s planning on utilizing everything he?s learned from the experience he gained playing and working with several men he respects.

?It hasn?t really set in yet,? said Yurkow. ?I feel like I could work for seven days, 24 hours and still have work to do. I?m really excited, I still have that euphoria of being named head coach. We have a lot of work to do, but pretty soon we?ll have to start turning our attention to fall ball.

?When I?m talking to recruits I?m used to saying you?ll get to talk to the head coach, and now they?re talking to him. I think occasionally, wait, I?m the head coach, I can do whatever I want. I?ve been very fortunate to play for some very good coaches. I played for Al Radano, Dennis Radano, Pop Barth, Juan Ranero at Rowan, John Cole. It?s probably why I stayed in coaching and gravitated toward it.?

And Yurkow has every intention of staying at Penn as long as it takes to win that Ivy League championship ? and beyond.

?It?s always good to come home and work at a place like Penn, it just made a lot of sense to me,? he said. ?The No. 1 goal is to become a head coach, but it was a bonus to be able to stay at a place like Penn which is such a great place to work. That made it that much sweeter. I?m just trying to enjoy it. I?m not planning on going anywhere anytime soon.?

Have folks had reliable service using Google Voice and Net10? I have tried it twice now, separated by some months, and both times I had to give up using GV because callers reported getting messages something like "this number not in service" and then they weren't able to leave voice messages. And, even if they got through to GV and left a voice message, sometimes they weren't delivered ever or else they came through days later. I keep being tempted to try again to use my GV number as my main number, forwarding usually to my Net10 phone but sometimes to other phones, but I am very wary after my last two experiences. ...

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) ? Cory Monteith, the handsome young actor who shot to fame in the hit TV series "Glee" but was beset by addiction struggles so fierce that he once said he was lucky to be alive, was found dead in a hotel room, police said. He was 31.

The Canadian-born Monteith, who played star quarterback-turned-singer Finn Hudson on the Fox TV series about a high school glee club, was found dead in his room on the 21st floor of the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel on Vancouver's waterfront at about noon Saturday, according to police.

Acting Vancouver Police Chief Doug LePard said there was no indication of foul play and "the cause of death was not immediately apparent."

Monteith's body was found by hotel staff who entered his room after he missed his check-out time, LePard said. Monteith had checked into the hotel on July 6.

"We do not have a great deal of information as to cause of death," said British Columbia Chief Coroner Lisa Lapointe. She said further tests would be needed to determine how Monteith died.

"The exact nature of those examinations will depend on investigative findings within the next day or two as information is gathered from medical records and discussions with family take place," she said.

LePard said Monteith had been out with people earlier and that those people are being interviewed.

Video and electronic records from the hotel indicate Monteith returned to his room by himself early Saturday morning, and he was believed to be alone when he died, LePard said.

Lapointe said he had been dead for several hours by the time his body was found.

"I have no words! My heart is broken," Dot-Marie Jones, who plays football coach Shannon Beiste on "Glee," said in a post on her Twitter account Saturday night. She called Monteith a "hell of a friend" and an "amazing" man.

Josh Sussman, who plays Jacob on "Glee," tweeted: "I am so saddened to hear about Cory. He was such a great guy/Super-kind &warm."

"What an absolutely tragic loss of a very talented young man," tweeted Zooey Deschanel, star of another Fox show, "New Girl."

Fox and the producers of "Glee," including 20th Century Fox Television, called him an exceptional performer "and an even more exceptional person. He was a true joy to work with and we will all miss him tremendously."

"We are in shock and mourning this tragic loss," his representatives at Viewpoint Public Relations in Los Angeles said in a statement.

In April, Monteith admitted himself to a treatment facility for "substance addiction" and asked for privacy as he took steps toward recovery, a representative said at the time.

Lea Michele, his "Glee" co-star and real-life girlfriend, told People magazine that she loved and supported him and was proud he was seeking help.

It was not Monteith's first time in rehab. He received treatment when he was 19 and had previously talked about his addiction struggles, saying he had a serious problem and took just "anything and everything."

He told Parade magazine in 2011 that he was "lucky to be alive."

Monteith, who turned 31 on May 11, starred in "Glee" as a high school football player who puts his status and popularity at risk to join the glee club and its outcast members.

The show, with its pop music-based song-and-dance numbers and high-profile guest stars including Gwyneth Paltrow, became an immediate hit and made stars of its relatively unknown cast.

The series, which debuted in 2009, is in its fourth season.

On his Twitter account, Monteith described himself as "tall, awkward, canadian, actor, drummer, person."

In a 2010 interview with The Associated Press, Monteith was upbeat about life. He said that if "Glee" were to be canceled he would be OK.

"I've never been afraid of working," he said. "I've never been afraid of auditioning for jobs. Obviously, I've never been afraid of anonymity. I was happy (before 'Glee'). I'm happy now. I guess I'm well adjusted."

Monteith was among the "Glee" actors who remained series regulars as their characters graduated high school and moved on to other adventures.

According to his biography on Fox's website, Monteith was born in Calgary, Alberta, and moved to Vancouver Island as a child. Before turning to acting, he held a variety of jobs including Wal-Mart greeter, school bus driver, roofer and cab driver.

"Thanks for always being kind Cory. You came a long way from hanging on the beaches in Vancouver with the gang pre-Glee," tweeted Gerard Funk, an actor from Vancouver who joined the "Glee" cast last year.

Monteith's TV credits included roles on the series "Kaya" and "Kyle XY" and guest appearances on "Smallville," ''Supernatural," ''Stargate," ''Flash Gordon" and "Interns." His film credits included "Final Destination 3," ''The Invisible," ''Deck the Halls" and "Whisper."
