It?s easy for kids to get bored and jittery when the weather outdoors is dreary. As a matter of fact, you may even get a little restless yourself. If you are trapped indoors, it can be enjoyable to have a family day by planning a few fast craft projects. Even if you are running low on craft supplies, you can frequently find anything you might need in a drawer in your kitchen. If you can find a container of popcorn that has not been popped, then you have enough materials right there for an enjoyable day for both you and your kid. The following are a few great tips for some simple crafts you can make with popcorn.

Bean Bags

While they aren?t called ?corn bags?, you can still use popcorn as a substitute for beans in these creative little baggies. In reality, they can even be simpler to use than beans because they are smaller. Find some fun cloth scraps and sew them together to form little bags. If you are feeling creative, you can make them in custom shapes, like animals or cars. But, to keep things simple, just stitch together a couple basic squares, leaving a couple inches open on a side. Don?t forget to put the right sides of the material together before sewing, so that you will be able to flip them before filling. Once you have the bags sewed, fill a large bowl with popcorn kernels. Your children can then fill the bags with the popcorn. Using a funnel may make this task easier. After you have filled the bag about two thirds full, you can sew it closed. You can then organize a few fun games which can be played indoors, such as a contest to see who can toss the most bags in a box or pail. Or you can play a different tossing game using the bean bags, like ?Hot Potato?. Don?t forget to take some pictures of all of these fun memories which are being made, so that you will be able to place them in picture frames.

Creating Mosaic Artwork

If you have several colors of popcorn, then you can create mosaic art. Find a piece of lightweight cardboard, maybe poster board, and give it to your child. Have them draw some uncomplicated designs on the board as a pattern for putting on the popcorn. Spread white glue on every part of the drawing. Then while the glue is still wet, apply the popcorn kernels to the board. Apply different colors of the kernels to different parts of the picture until the whole pattern is covered. After drying, you could even place a few of these mosaics in picture frames, presenting them on the wall. Or, use the mosaics as eye-catching trivets.

Popcorn Jewelry and Decorations

It doesn?t have to be a holiday time of year for you and your kids to enjoy putting popcorn on string. Pop a big bowl of popcorn. Then hand each kid a yarn needle threaded with quilting thread or a lightweight string. They may then string the popped kernels of corn, alternating with some dry cereal rings if desired for variety. The garlands can be hung up around your home in a decorative manner. Or, create shorter strands, knotting the ends together to make popcorn necklaces. Take a few pictures of your family decked out in their own popcorn jewelry creations, and display them in picture frames.
