George Washington in Milford Connecticut-----Really

So Mr. Washington did come to Milford--really. That small monument; actually that plaque on a rock, just outside of the Parsons Complex memorializes the General's visit to Clark's Tavern in November of 1789.

If you believe all of the tourist motivated legends and actually calculate the time and distance spent, George Washington slept in so many places it is inconceivable he had the time to win our independence from

?England. Now, with his own diaries accessible online some of the facts can now be sifted from the myths.

One thing we knew for sure--while everyone was concerned about George Washington's nocturnal whereabouts--the dude had to eat.

What actually occurred at Milford's Ye Old Clark Tavern that November morning in 1789 may not be as celebrated as the crossing of the Delaware but it is documented--somewhat. The General was a meticulous diarist noting daily a full weather report each morning upon waking, along with his destinations for the day and a summary of adventures in between. As a forerunner to Zagat though, his restaurant reviews mostly left a bad taste.

18th Century taverns more so than the confines of the local house of worship were the public meetinghouses of the day, where pressing issues of political and local intrigue were debated with spirit and spirits.

Alcohol had to wash down the chow since clean drinking water was scarce.

Printed menus were even scarcer. Not so much to dispense with a paper traul, but meal planning was simply never in the cards. Meals were based on the ready availability of that morning's find at the local market. The being wartime as well, the pickings were slim and surprising.

It appears George Washington ate at Clark's on more than one occasion. He was a constant traveler on the Boston Post Road, then known as the Boston Turnpike, straight thru Milford center. Diary aside, George's favorite meal was breakfast and for breakfast it was porridge. Nourishing and easy on the teeth.
