iPhone owners might pride themselves with having one of the most technologically advanced smartphones on the market, but according to iOS developer Daniel Amitay, their passcodes are decidedly less complex. Amitay created the Big Brother Camera Security app, which utilizes its own passcode prompt in order to change settings. Anonymously collecting information of over 200,000 users, Amity was able to compile a list of the most commonly used 4-digit entry codes.
On the top of the list was the hacker-friendly "1234" combination, with nearly 9,000 users defaulting to the simple series. From there, the most commonly used codes were "0000", "2580", and "1111." Years were also popular, with every year from 1980 to 2000 making it in the top 100 list. The passcodes on the list apply only to the app itself, and the owners' codes of choice for their handsets may well differ, though it is still rather perplexing that users concerned enough to download a security app would allow it to be cracked with such simple combinations.
What this should teach us is that if you are going to go through the trouble of setting up your handset with a passcode lock, it pays to be complex. Spelling out "Love" or assuming a potential thief wouldn't try your clever "4567" passcode simply doesn't cut it anymore. Be random, be unpredictable, and be secure.
