ANNECY -- Jan Kounen ("Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky," "Dobermann") is attached to direct sci-fi adventure 3D toonpic "Windwalkers -- Chronicle of the 34th Horde." Now in pre-production, "Windwalkers," which is budgeted at Euros 18 million ($26.2 million), will be the helmer's first animated feature. The English-language movie is adapting from Alain Damasio's novel "La Horde du Contrevent," which sold more than 100,000 copies in France. Set in a world buffeted by terrifying winds, the film tracks the attempt by an elite team to reach the land of Upper Reaches, where they believe the winds are generated. Magali Helle penned an initial adaptation and the producers are in talks with another screenwriter. Kounen has directed a teaser for the film. Marc Caro ("Delicatessen," "The City of Lost Children") has come on board as the pic's vfx and art supervisor. "Windwalkers" marks the first movie from French production house Forge Animation, which was launched in September. Based out of the French Riviera, it was founded by CEO Herve Trouillet, who produced "Linus & Boom" for Canal J, finance and strategy director Nicolas Romain and line-producer Fabien Baboz, who heads up Paris' Caribara studios. Forge, which creates transmedia projects for 15-35 year olds, is producing a "Windwalkers" vidgame.
